Is there an adjustment on kill switch

My boat used to stall when putting it in hear. Now the boats not getting out of the gear I am putting it in after we adjusted the lower shift cable.

Is there any other adjustments beside the brass cylinder that could be adjusted? I think the kill switch is not activating

If it was stalling going into gear, you need a new lower shift cable .Test the switch by moving it out of the valley. It should stall/stumble the motor.

With the engine running (on muff if not in the water), if you activate the switch by hand does the engine die? It should.

So yes it does. No longer stalls. Just doesn't want to find neutral. The switch works manually

If the shift works manually then something is causing it to engage too long or at the wrong time.... "usually" a worn lower shift cable.

How old is your lower shift cable?

Adjust your cables as shown in the document below.
DO NOT skip any steps, or take short cuts, and it will work as long as everything is put together properly.

I lied. Manually holding switch in does not kill engine.

Your 3rd picture link didn't work, your first picture shows the switch activated. It shouldn't be if you could take a picture of it.

Not sure where the wires go to on your switch, but it just doesn't look right. So below is the wiring diagram, make sure the wires on the switch is right.
Make sure before you answer, assume nothing.

The switch should kill the engine when it is moved 1/8" away from the valley in the lever. Use a 1/8" drill to set that up... THEN start trying to find out what else is going on.

I removed the stern drive and took the lower cable out. I am going to get a new gasket as I broke mine, and then run through the adjustments for the kill switch and the cable. I noticed that it was not full catching in gear and that little barrel you adjust on the lower cable, is so so precise. So currently on stand still until I can get that gasket and a few O-rings.

I do have these concerns.

1) The Lower cable moves fine without any resistance. Should I still replace it? aka does it stretch and I wouldn't notice?
2) I see on the wire diagram that the white/green cable from the kill switch patches into the Gray cable which runs to the (-) of coil. Is this the same gray wire as the Tach? I ran a new tact wire from tach to (-) so if it is, then should I run a new w/g to the (-) as well? I currently have two wires on the (-) coil. A black one that runs to the cap and a gray one that runs to the tachometer.

Yes, hook the white/green wire to the - terminal of the coil. Without that, the shift interrupt will not work.

1. If the cable stretched, then an adjustment would solve the problem, for a short time, until it stretched a bit more... I've never seen a stretched cable BTW... Corroded, broken, but not stretched...
2. Yes, same wire that runs the tacho. If you didn't reconnect the white/green when you ran the new cable... :facepalm:... That might be why the interrupt switch isn't working...????

Makes sense. I was looking at the wire diagram and I thought to myself, well wait a second.. i replaced this cable and I know its no longer hooked to that wire. Makes sense why it was not working, be cause when I had it off, I tested that switch with continuity and it worked.

The cable itself was never replaced by me, so I am not sure how old it is. This is my first year with the boat. It looked fine with no corrosion or breaks. I assume since it moves freely, I will keep it for now. Can always replace it if needed. I put some lube down the cable shaft to be safe.

Thanks for the help as always. I will fix that cable and hopefully get that adjustment working from the tests in the OEM manual. The problem where it stalled and didnt start isn't something I am going to be able to fix until it happens again. I recall saying to my dad (who was operating it at the time) that the engine seemed hot. Never did check the temp gauge at that time though :facepalm:. Ill check spark and heat and all that when it happens again. You know, I over filled it by accident, which forced gas into my tank vent hose. I was able to blow it out when I got home and it started up. I don't think that is related though.


For now I just want to get this adjustment right!

Ahhh... Never put lube in those cables. They're teflon lined, and all the lube will do is cause them to bind up...

If it were me, I'd pull the drive, strip the inner out of the cable, pour white spirits or turpentine (even petrol) down the cable and blow it out with LOTS of dry compressed air... Then clean the inner and thread it back in and set up the adjustment....
