i know this is not a repair question, but why does NADA BOATS value Johnsons less than the comparable Evinrude. Is it just the evinrude reputation? Do they still come out of the same plant? the reason i'm asking is i haven't bought a new motor in years and am in the market, for something betweem 100 hp and 135hp.

Re: is there a reason?

NADA uses a depreciation formula based on new MSRP, Daddy. It bears little or no relation to the real market.

(Watch this)

When we were Evinrude dealers we were told it's because the Evinrudes were the good ones. All the parts that failed inspection were used to make Johnsons.

(That ought to create some comments)

I thought I heard somewhere that if it started on the first pull or try it was painted green. If not, painted white.

Well back in the old days they told Evinrude Dealers anything they could think of to keep selling them product.Seems the white paint cans were actually blue paint. It worked. (GRIN)(WINK).

I do remember customers who would not buy Johnson 50:1 oil.It had to be Evinrude 50:1 oil.Once had a customer who didn't want Johnson fog oil, wanted Evinrude.I peeled the label off for him and it said Lawnboy.

Since the BRP takeover (buyout) they do give Evinrude the bells and whistles, and it is a different engine. So the $$$$ differnce.

DHP

Can you give a little history about Johnson/Evinrude? I always wondered how the exact same motors ended up with two different names on them.
