Is there a HP rating for our hulls?

My boat came with a 190 HP Volvo-Penta 4.3. Would I be breaking Coast Guard rules if I dropped in a stroked 351W (393) and hooked it up?

Would the hull be able to handle a slightly heavier and much more powerful engine? Or would I need to add some reinforcement to the hull for a torque-monster addition?

Re: Is there a HP rating for our hulls?

several questions here?

What are your REAL goals - hp and speed?
did this boat have v8 option? - is it stern heavy now with the v6?
Do you have an understanding of, and a source for, the parts required to switch from chevy to ford power? Have you priced this???

Just how much are you willing to spend to end up with a boat whose handiling will most likely be compromised -vs- cost of a boat that was factory setup for the power and speed your are looking for?

2003 Glastron GX 185,

Ayuh,... If ya found the parts to do it,...

She'd be an awlfull Handfull with a 25" wheel, 'n the right drive ratio...

Our stable here has a 19' Slickcraft, 350, 4bbl., Alpha 1,....
It's a Real Handfull,... Ya gotta pay Attention....

Re: Is there a HP rating for our hulls?

Nothing wrong with the current engine. Only has 180-ish hours on it.

I was just wondering...for the future when/if the engine finally wears out. 302 and 351 fords, or even 350 chevies are a dime a dozen, and simple to work on, and parts are cheap and easy to find.

As for the original question...I guess the best answer I got so far is "did it come with a V8 option" so i can look in to that.

Re: Is there a HP rating for our hulls?

We discussed this the other day.. I am pretty sure it didn't come with a V8.. Seems like you gotta hit 20ft or better to get a V8 from the factory.. I am sure that's cause of the wild ride as said above...Still I think it could be done.. Would be a kinda one of a kind.. Found that Volvo the other day for $500 PULLEY to prop.. That would be the only way to really try it.. It would be a butt puckering ride if the lake was rough..

I don't think you can say "always" here......

My previous boat was a 1966 Mark Twain. 18' V-sonic. It came with a 150hp (230 cu-in inline-6) Mercruiser #1 drive.

The boat could be ordered with a 120, 140, 150, 190, 310 engines. The 310 engine was a 409 GM V-8 coupled to a Mercruiser #2 drive.

The only difference with the big V-8 was they removed the back seats.

The hull-plate indicated that the maximum HP was 310. In that 18ft boat, it would have been able to FLY!! (It did about 45 mph when it was new with the 150 Merc installed)

The hull plate for your boat should indicate the maximum HP. (for 2003, it will be Prop-HP.......back in the "old-days" it was crankshaft HP)

i haven't found the hull plate yet. That was why I was asking here. Where is the typical location for hull plate?

I don't know where it is on your boat. In the past they were in the back someplace... Yours probably has a HID (Hull ID) on the back "cast" into the gel-coat.

Your boat is new enough that you can just probably get a hold of Glastron and ask them what the MAX HP for the boat is....

They can also tell you what engines the boat was available with.

50 mph is plenty fast.. Been 70 on the water and grit my teeth the whole way..

Scoop! lets just build a jet boat or one with a V drive.Cost will be the less. Take all three to the lake and stay the weekend at the park.. Oh yeah

HEY!! Thanks for reminding me of Marble Falls!!! I have never been there during the drags, but now that I have a decent boat, we may need to make a trip out there and view it from the water!

Gotta look it up and see when it is going on...

Looks like August 12-14 this year. But I was not aware that the drags were on the river...I thought they were on the wider lake area. I guess there is no spectator "seating" on the water...

Staying in the GM line, going from the 4.3 V6 to the V8 is done relatively often since bell housings are the same. GM to Ford means nothing is the same including accessory items bolted to the engine.

It's lake LBJ. They can call it what they like.. You would wanta be in the water.. Everytime I been it was deathly hot.. We use to load boats on the out ramp... Who wants to be a spectator?? Build a jet boat and run in the thing.Would be fun.. Flat bottom river running class. Shoot they drag jet skis there..

Re: Is there a HP rating for our hulls?

This is absolutely NOT true in the marine industry.

exactly... Car engines are NOT marine engines. Might be based on the same block, but cams, compression ratios, and most importantly, SAFETY parts are all different. Throw a typical car engine into a boat, and worst case, you blow up the first time you turn the key becaus the non-marine alternator tossed out some sparks.

Smoking...good point. I would have never thought to purchase a "marine" alternator and would have most likely just hit autozone for a replacement on my Volvo...

smoking and scooper, I am not even talking about alternators or cams, that stuff isn't hard to get. I am talking MARINE exhaust manifolds and risers for a Ford. Engine couplers, too. Distributors too. Those things are either NLA or twice the cost of Chevy small block stuff. Ford hasn't been in the marine engine business in 20 years.
