I dunno where the previous posters are from but around here (the South) everybody loves thru-hull. I think it's badass and I get a lot more annoyed at a motorcycle downtown than a loud boat on an open lake.

It only depends on whether you're the one making the "noise" or the one who HAS to listen to it.

I had Capts Call on my Liberator. The 460 with open exhaust actually does sound pretty cool when it's "on". .......But, everybody else in the boat usually screams "TURN IT OFF!! TURN IT OFF!!! TURN IT OFF!!!!

Keeps the exhaust from making the outdrive so hot, and sounds great. There is not a much better sound than a boat with a nice sounding thru hull exhaust.

I will agree to a point. I like a nice sounding boat and one in tune will turn my head. But only from a half mile away. Any closer than that and it is just plain annoying.

No advantage till you're making some pretty big power.
I only have thru hulls on mine, no bafles or anything. Just the external flappers. It's loud for sure. All I ever get is compliments. I would enjoy captains call once in a while but I can deal with it. I also have the pipes and elbows to run it out the thru hull under the water line and you can't hardly hear it until on plane. I like it loud though.

yeah, and I would venture to guess that's 400+ HP isn't it?

The Capts Call didn't make ANY difference on my slightly "built" 460.....It just made more noise.

I'm guessing that if I had a stroked 472 etc... it might have made some difference and made the extra noise worth it.

As it was, I never used it more than a min or 2.

AND when I removed the 460 and replace the whole mess with the 454/Bravo, I blocked off the thru-hulls and left the Capts Call on the floor!

Getting back to the original post yes there is definitely an advantage to through transom exhaust. If you plan on increasing performance of your boat that is one of the first things that is a must. If you try other things like carbs, intakes, cams, ignition systems your just wasting your time and money with out improving your exhaust. None of those will work with out improving exhaust. If there is any one thing that improves performance it's exhaust.

I'm from the mid west and run on the Mississippi. We love our open exhaust boats around here. We don't care what the old ladies up north have to say. Nothing like an afternoon of river racing. Nothing like the sound of a big block singin through open exhaust as your cruisin up the river past all the kiddy boats.

Wrong, you can get a WHOLE lot of performance without thru hulls

Old ladies? Kiddie boats??? Nice post, I bet you're a young boy with daddies boat in your pics LOL.

I think you're right. Exhaust restriction doesn't really make a HUGE difference until you start moving a lot of exhaust. I think this means you have to have a LOT of cu-inches.

It didn't really make any difference with 460.

If you have Captains Call, don't you still have exhaust bellows to worry about?

Yes sir. Like the guys over on speedwake with HUGE power, and by huge over 6-700 hp at least, then every little bit matters. On a stock small block or stock big block, it is all just ear candy. I mean, I have hotrods, and I love the sound of a sweet V8, but man, hearing it on a boat in my opinion contradicts why I boat. For relaxation.

No disrespect to those with a need for speed :D

Your definition of performance must be a lot different than mine!!

I wish I was still a young boy, and knew what I know now, but I guess that's just how it goes.

Compensating for something?

Count me in the "old ladies from up north" group.:p

Takes more than a paint job and some chrome to get me excited anymore.

And you REALLY read the question, you will see there is nothing in it about performance. The point of the question was BELLOWS.
