Re: computer help.

Yup sounds like you've got some spyware/adware/malware. There's a lot of tools to choose from I'll give you a few I use.

Try Windows Defender first. It works pretty good and it really easy to use.

If that doesn't take care of it, try AVG Antispyware.

In most cases you'll be rid of whatever you got by using one or both of those tools. If so, pick the one you like best and uninstall the other one.

Be VERY wary of free anti-spyware software you might find while searching. Some of them is in fact spyware. Those two I gave are good.

Anyway, start with that. It's easy. Hopefully that'll take care of it. If not, we'll go from there. Good luck.

I'm Not a Geek by any stretch of the Imagination,......

But,....
My line of Defence is,.....

Ad-aware,..... The Free 1 of course.... I run it Weekly.....
Spy-Bot, Search & Destroy,...... free......It runs in the background.....
CCleaner,.......free.....I run this 1 Every time I close my browser........
And AVG,Anti-Virus.. the Free edition.......This 1 runs All the Time, Including Updating itself......
Way Better than my old Norton's.....

With these programs,.... The few times I picked up a Bug,....
1 of them Found,+ Fixed it.......

Re: computer help.

He asked how to get rid of it. How to not get is a different discussion. :)

You might also want to look into registrymechanic as well... not free.. but it cleans any crap out of your registry were some of the better written spyware can hide.

Also you can go to trendmicros home page and they have a free malware scan thats pretty good for free

yes OS X will keep you from getting the problem, but i386 is right also. That is a different discussion. Spybot and Ad-Aware work good. You may also want to boot into safe mode and run them. Usually its the F8 key on startup and select safe mode. Once they have run, just restart normally.

Re: computer help.

Well, I was hoping to hear back from Ron G. There's a number of ways of skinning this cat but I didn't want to overload him to start with.

I hope his wife didn't see the popups from Adult Friend Finder and do this...

Re: computer help.

As i386 has mentioned, be aware that some popups are themselves a come on to download a 'fix' for a problem that your 'system' has detected.

The popup will state something on the order that your system is infected and to 'click here' to get rid of the problem. If you click on it, your problems will really begin. The popup is crafted to look just like a Windows warning message and installs a trojan or spyware that opens the flood gates to your system.

It's just another reason to NOT run your system with Administrator rights all of the time and to use a login and password to get into Windows with limited permissions.

That's great news. Just remember it's not good to have a lot of different "real time" protection programs running at once. If you haven't already, I'd recommend you pick the one you like the best and uninstall the others if they're doing any real-time monitoring. Another option is to keep them for occasional scanning but disable their real-time monitoring component.
