quick and easy fix is to install fins on your outboard to help you get out of the hole faster and maybe rig up some sort of spash guard around the outboard splash well here a pic of the fins, they work really well and will get you out of the hole easily and quickly, hope this helps

My son had a rig kinda like yours and it sat low in the back and a bit hard to get on plane, so we put a couple of 50lb. burlap sand bags in the front and it helped a lot. It's a cheap fix buy it works pretty good and the bags don't really bother anything just laying up there. Good Luck!

heres a pic i found of splashguards, kinda fab up something like this, my buddy had to do this on his jetboat as it would back flood when coming off of a plane. his worked really well but his guard was a lot higher than this one. photo attached

and ya like robert said put some weight up front, start with just the fuel tanks and battery and see how that does...good luck

At that angle it looks to me like your cavitation plate is below the bottom of the transom. You can adjust that motor to go up a bit. If you look at your transom bolts, you have a four hole adjustment on the top. If it were me, I'd raise it up two holes. Then put new transom bolts in the long slots at the bottom of your transom mount. You are also missing your adjustment rod that goes in across those 5 holes. This will raise your motor up a bit too. Those adjustments alone will help your issue. And don't go into reverse too fast. You will definitely get wet fast. A nice splashwell would help that issue.

I vote for the cut transom, too. Looks like they dropped the motor as low as possible, then drilled new lower bolt holes in the bracket. Not a expert on this vintage motor, but I've never seen a smaller OB with three (3) bolts on the bracket side. Your options are limited, as discussed above, and all require money to make the boat safe to operate ...

I'm with the "chopped down transom" group.

Beachcomber's splash guard looks more like a spray guard. I think you have a dangerous situation with an improperly altered hull, and your fixes (add weight, try to put in a guard to keep out water) will make it more dangerous. Your boat needs to have a safe amount of freeboard all around, and should seldom if ever ship water. Get rid of the hull, or restore the transom and get a 20" motor. Seriously. Tabs and fins are for adjusting a safe situation, not fixing a dangerous one.

PS with what you know now, if someone gets hurt due to the defect, your insurance might be void. You also might not pass a USCG inspection (why not ask them about it?)

im trying to think of cheap easy fixes so that the boat is usable, maybe after moving the fuel and weight to the front it may not be a dangerous situation, and ive personally been on boats with both the outboard fins and splashguards and both worked very well and solved the problem at hand....the only time this boat is with low freeboard is when getting on a plane, you minimize the time to get on a plane(outboard fins) and prevent any splash (guards) from coming in then theres no dangerous situation left...My buddy with the jet boat had TONS of water coming in when coming off a plane so much that it almost flooded his motor, guards installed and dry as a bone...

this stuff is worth a try rather than telling him to get a new boat or motor, try to make what you have work first...were not all made of money right.

does it actually take water in the boat when at planing speed? it might not be that dangerous, and if you are just using it on calm water maybe not that big of a deal.

you could possibly glass in a sort of contained splashwell, with a nice bilge pump of course.

no...... the boat does not take on water while running from the hole or at planing speed, its just really low, he got a little water when he came off the throttle ( hard ) , but not a ton of water, ( enough that the bilge took it out in about 5 seconds )

except for the battery, there wasn't more than 2-3 gals of fuel in the tank, I don't think that much weight would make any difference...he only weight about 160 wet, figure and average sized man at 180 +, hell the guy I bought it from had a ton of pics of him and 3 guys fishing from it in the gulf, I 'd say all those guys were under or around 200 ??

I guess I need to get some pics from the dock ( empty, with 1 person, 2 persons etc ) and see how much weight in the rear and the distance from the top to the water line and so on......

as for the life jackets, at least they are at their feet, I know that doesn't do any good but they are teenagers and you can't tell them anything
