Re: Is skiing a dieing sport?

One thing about skiing not being as popular.. My buddy bought a pair for $5 at a resale shop.. I musta pulled him a 100 miles on those things.. Also we had someone give us a knee board.. Of all the times I went out this year.. I saw one skier.. Everyone in the boat said hey look a skier... It's getting rare I am afraid..Wakeboard is the thing.. Shoot they make $50000 boats made for doing it and making huge wake. I do none of the tow stuff.. I will drag anyone who wants to go and bring their own gear.. I drive the boat.. Too much sweat and blood invested to let someone mess it up.. It's my baby.

I do have a tub and a rope to kill my friends kids with, but I didn't give anything for it..

How is pulling a skier going to "mess up" your boat? I'm not getting that one.

In fact, pulling a skier puts far less force on your boat than pulling a tube. Look at the relative size difference between a tube tow rope (rated at 2-4000 pounds) and a ski rope which I think are rated at maybe 700 pounds.

I think he is saying that he doesn't want to be towed around, aka someone else driving his boat but he will pull anyone else from his boat.

I don't know *** from tat, but I was out every weekend this summer @ 2 different lakes. Mostly tube's & wakeboard's. They were mostly kid's & teens, the skiers I did see were a little bit older, not old by any means, just older. I think it takes quite a bit of talent to ski the correct way. Anyone can hang onto a tube, this is my skill level. Wakeboarding seems to be a lot harder, & really hard to do what some people do on them, but just to get up on a ski is pretty hard. One way or the other, I like to just anchor out of the way & watch all the action on the lake. As far as going out of style, I don't think so. It's just another generation separation & like stated in another post, "Everything comes back in style sooner or later". Just my 2 c.

Not where I live. The skiers here seem to enjoy using anchored boats as course bouys and the closer they can get the happier they seem to be, with complete disregard for the safety of the occupants of the anchored boats!

I've even seen some of these fools still out skiing after sunset. Which here is illeagal but there is no enforcement!

Dying? no but as a society our taste are changing. There just aren't as many people who actually get out and do anything anymore. Skiis are still selling and skiers are still riding them but they are no onger the only game in town.

I'm an old water-skier since the 1960's. From my view, it looks like wakeboarding is the current fad. Generally, people want to do what's "in" at the moment. As soon as someone invents a new method and it gets marketed as being "cool", it catches on and the throngs of people jump on it.

Getting up on a slalom ski takes more strength and technique, but once up, I like the increased sensation of speed and being able to "carve the turns". Wakeboarding doesn't interest me because, at my age, I'm not in to getting "air". If I want that, I rent an airplane where you can really feel some exhilaration.

Yeah my uncles used to use one of thoses and every once in awhile we will pull it out and try things on it, best so far is getting up with a folding chair and opening it and riding while sitting in the chair.

"Is skiing a dieing sport?"

Short answer-YES!

The sport is considered as vast energy resource consumer. Just ask any 6-15 year old. They are taught that and believe it.

The funny/scary part about it is that the "priveleged" will always have the means to do so.

Thanks for the day-brightener there DJ.

Does that sentiment apply to ALL recreational boating since it serves no practical purpose and simply consumes fossil fuel?

Hate to be a bummer but it is true. And, yes, that applies to ANY motorized sport.

Those that restrict the public will always have the privelege. Just watch.

Naw, just some of them. Every 12-15 y/o (the age of my kids and their friends) I've had on my boat love it. They ski, wakeboard, kneeboard, tube, and generally have a great time. Not one has turned down the offer.

As to skiing, my son (he's 15) loves it, but he wakeboards as well. The first and last run of the day is always slalom, because the water is the best. In between is everything else.

The hard core skiers have just found calm water hiding spots to enjoy their sport. I had to look for them when I thought the sport was dying.

Boat US Magazine has a wakeboarding article this month. They state wakeboarding has overtaken skiing now. Sign o' the times.

I say yes and add kneeboarding to the list too. All I ever see is wildly untallented wakeboarders and tubers. What I can't figure out is why there are so many new and expensive Mastercrafts and similar always around but never a skilled boarder. We grew up on trick skis, kneeboards and slalom. I think I'd faint if I saw a trick skier.

Hello buddy
Don't worry. It is not dieing but movement is slow. I really enjoy it very much. I am shearing it because i love skiing very much. I enjoy it 6 times per week. But recently its uses have been decreased.
people would want replace something of it.
I like dave4881 post and telling you that we have to live it.
For this reason we have to take various policy.
Thanks
