Is my shifter installed right?

Hi all, I just replaced my water pump impeller and I have the upper and lower re-joined no problem . When I have the shift rod pointing to forward position the prop locks when I rotate prop clockwise , and freewheels turning counterclockwise with a “clunk-clunk” noise ( like shift dogs are jumping) if I hold pressure on shifter shaft. Neutral freewheels either direction with no noise. Locks when prop turned counterclockwise when shifted to reverse and clunks with shift shaft pressure when turning clockwise . Is this normal or did I mess up clocking of shifter internally?

You have it right. It is normal for the propeller to “ratchet” when the drive is in either gear. If it did that in neutral then the shift is not splined right.

with the shift shoe facing fwd the prop is locked CCW and ratchets CW for forward gear, turning the shift shaft fully counterclockwise the prop now will lock clockwise and ratchet counterclockwise
