is my lower unit bad

just gought a boat and got it running took off from dock went about a mile running 75% trottle andall of a sudden it wrapped out (revd up). i tried going but it would throttle up but never get faster than an idle speed so i idled all the way back to thre dock it will go about 5% above idlein speed....this is a 1980 merc 20 hp what did i do and what do i do to fix it without spending a fortune

Sounds like you have a spun hub in your prop. Prop can be rebuilt by a prop shop or replaced.

ok update i finally got over the fact that i wanted to burn and sink my boat lol and went out and did a little self diagnosis but have 0 knowledge of outboards but i put boat in gear motor off forwards prop will spin one direction but the other it spins likeits in gear and can hear internals spiniing sound good as for reverse both directions it turns like its in gear so these are my new up dates any help is greatly appreciated

This was my first thought too. Take the prop off and have a shop look at it to see if it is spun.
