Is it worth the work 66 Evinrude 15hp

Hi everyone.
I bought a 58 FeatherCraft Ranger the other day from an 85 year old man who owned it most of his life. The engine is only a 15hp which I have not been able to start yet. 15 Horses is not enough so I will replace it at some point.

Is it worth trying to get this running? The starter turns it over nice and freely when connected to a battery but I don't believe I am getting any spark. I gave a couple shots of 2 cycle directly into the cylinders but resulted in zero pops. I am wondering why there is not spark. Maybe I just need to get some new plugs and coils and try it then but here is why I am hesitant.

The old man said it ran beautiful when parked. BUT...the reason he parked it was because a large wake flooded the boat when docked (or turned it on it's side...he can't remember which). He could not remember if he tried starting it again after that or if he just put it in the barn where it sat for the last 7 years. ALSO...he cannot remember if the engine was totally submerged or not. He is certain that he didn't try draining water or winterizing the motor before sticking it away.

SO...
Would the starter turn the motor over if it was submerged and then stuck in a barn for 7 years? It was a little sticky but I freed it with a wrench before hitting the start button. It spins good.

What else would keep it from getting spark after sitting so long?

Tomorrow I am going to grab a 65 Evinrude Speeditwin for a $100. Owner says compression good but only has spark on one cylinder and that it was running a year or so ago.

In my opinion!
Unless you really want to save the 15 and you have the time and money to put into it
sell it as is and move on.
It will likely take more time than money but time is money. If you decide to go for it.
A compression test would be first up before anything else to determine if it’s worth messing with.

Thanks.
The Speeditwin is 28hp so it should push the boat along better anyway.

WELL... the 15 is a good engine and lots of folks bring them back alive.

2 coils are likely shot (cracked) they are 15$ each the rest maybe just a good clean of the points set at .020 Condensers may be bad also

it needs a new water impeller some gear oil etc...

they are strong motors (relatively speaking)

visit aomci.org site for great support and info

good hobby

Feathercrafts are good collectibles. I would find a '58 18hp or 35 in good shape, and go with that.

Thanks!
I sold the 15 in a heartbeat not realizing that everyone is looking for an electric start.
Duh!
But...a few days later I picked up a 1955 Johnson 25 Sea Horse.

I’m glad everything worked out for you. Sharp looking boat.
I just love that 50’s style.
Enjoy it.

Think I would still be on the lookout for a '57 or '58 35 while working on your '55 25.
