A got a free boat. A 1968 Arrow Glass with a 75 hp crysler outboard. Besides being powderpuff blue the hual of the boat seems to be in good shape. No evident cracks, holes and sounds solid. As for the engine when it was parked 7 years ago I was told it ran strong and that until then the guys father had it serviced yearly.

I had a boat shop tell me the engine probably would need at a minumum a carb rebuild.

Any suggestions on where to start?
What do you think as far as minumum cost to get on water?

First get a manual on the motor. A new impellar, overhaul carberators and fuel pump, Fresh gas, check all rubber hose and clean and reseat all electrical connection. Estimate price between $125 and $200. Can not over stress the importance of a manual. You can order it from iboats, just klick on the mnauals icon at the bottom of the page.

1st a used battery, some gas, and see if it will run. If it is locked up and/or no compression, don't waste any more time or money.

If you do get the motor running, only run it for a few seconds. Sitting 7 years could have put a set to the water pump impeller, and it may not pump water, overheating your motor in a matter of seconds. 2 strokes overheat quick. If it runs, you know its worth it to spend the $30-$40 on a new water pump impeller, a must for a motor that has sat that long. Just remember, even old boats can cause your wallet to hemorrhage cash like a sucking chest wound spews blood, so just be careful.....Good luck..

Ok.. It's be several part-time months.. but it runs.

got manual --

rebuilt carb, replace water pump, starter, replaced hoses, belt, plugs, and plug wires, ignition wires, new battery, oil and tank...

Started over the weekend.. ran it 50 gallon barrel..

ran good for the 2-3 minutes, turned off started up well 2nd time ran for 2-3 minutes more..

Ready for test on water... underpressure.. Anything more to look out for..

I plain to replace sterring cables and throttle cables before going on water.. ANY ADVICE????

Have invested about $180 + - ++++
Plus registration /transfer taxes/ trailer reg fees-- MD about $75

Boat still ugly interior and exterior.. will tackle this fall.. Trailer is crying for help.. little concerned to pull 35 miles to deep water. however the Inspection station barely looked at it..

Wish me luck...

Sounds good to me. My trailer is dog-ugly and sad as well, I need to rebuild it before I take the Beast out of the water. Just make sure the bearings and tires are in good shape, as well as the lights. You can worry about cosmetics later, as long as it WORKS. Its time for pics....

Freeboat, no harm in running it longer than 3 minutes in the drum, especially with a new impeller. You want to know now whether it will run for longer periods, especially before towing it 70 miles roundtrip. Also, check to see if battery is charging and fuel pump works well.

Sounds like a good project. Check the transom for flex. You might consider sealing the engine mount holes if all is dry as a bone else you might pour water into the transom. Has the boat been kept outside all these years. Were there leaves in the boat? Is the floor soft? It's almost better if all is deteroriated. That way you can commit to redoing floor stringrs and transom and have a sound boat for another 30 years.

if that thing sat for 7yrs i think i would take the plugs out and spray some lube in the cylinders and let it set for a couple days. if an outboard sits for long periods of time, the rings will stick. and seem fine until you put a load on it, then the ring(s) will end up breaking. thrust me "been there"!

Maybe I missed it but have you replaced the gear oil?
