is it worth buying??

i have found a 71 crestliner with a 55 hp envinrude triumph motor. seller insist that the motor is good but carbs need adjusting. we took it out and it ran but wouldnt get over 15 mph. he played with carbs and we had to be towed back in . motor hasnt ran since. he said we need to get the carbs in tune to eachother witch costs about $400 and he's asking 700 for the boat. is the carbs somthing i can fix or are we looking at alot of money to get the boat on the water again? Is there some way to adjust the carbs without having to put it on a dianostics (SP?) machine? the motor is a 1968 evinrude triumph 55 horse, model 55873 ser #j01816

Hey MNM<br /><br />Go to the big library in Downtown Wichita, and check out the manual on your proposed engine. Unless someone has really screwed up the carbs... if that's the only thing wrong with it, you can clean them, tune them to each other, and make that motor sing. Anyway, look at the description for tearing into the fuel system and the section on setting up the engine and decide for yourself.<br /><br />I would be more concerned that the engine is in good shape, good compression, lower unit gears and dog clutch OK, and the impeller and cooling system up to snuff before I was too concerned about carbs, which you can easily remove, clean and put back on without taking the engine apart.<br /><br />Good luck
