well just wondering one of my crazy ideas but this might just be the best idea yet. Could i buy bad motors fix them and then sell them for money? making money this way? Also could i maybe instead of fixing motors restore boats and make a profit or is fixing motors a better way to make profit?

Are you prepared to stand behind your work and spend your money making something right? Do you have the tools needed to fix O/Bs and the skills and training? SBL, most importantly- can you stay focused long enough to finish something? These are important questions you have to ask yourself. I hope you can say yes.

im just wondering because this would start me doing something i love doing and could be a job making money. But also a future bussness for me. Tools come as you need them. And im not talking about taking some ones outboard and fixing it and giving it back. im talking about buying one fixing it and selling it. Maybe after i restore a boat and it looks top notch that could be my stepping stone to starting. by being able to show off my first restoration.

I think you've asked this before. Yours is not a new idea, but you would be competing with those who do it for a living.
Rather than try to go through setting up the business, renting a space, getting licenses, insurance, etc. you should go work for someone and learn not only the skills but the business. You have to know both.
And whatever you do, don't quit school for this.

Bond-o gave you half an answer. Anything is possible--but not probable.

good point i might have a job at a boat yard in the spring. Aslo i would be competing with other people that would be hard. but i wouldn't have to start a bussniess it would just be a hobby for now. i'm going to get a boat to restore then that will be my bench mark. i would restore the chrysler but that would be crazy to do. since i would have to do the whole boat from gell coat to transom.

You talk the talk, you just never seem to be able to walk the walk. You seem to think you can fix stuff for nothing and sell it and it's all clear money.

You just don't have a clue,,, All you are, is an "I Want". You want money and boats, you have no skill, no money, no place to work, no experience, and no desire to work for anything.

sbl.......you keep mentioning how much you like fixing the boats.....but yours need work and is still in the drive way...

if you want a job working on boats.....great...lets get you to learn how to fix them.....

i dont mean to be negitive.....but at your young age.....consumer confidence might not be too high till you get some experiance.

.you have a great candidate boat. you just need to add chunks of wood between the ribs and glass them in.....and a transom job. lil red does not need a gell job.
fix the motor, and done !

i own a boat repair place...just like the one that you are talking about owning....if i was to hire a student....i would look at one that is still in school.....and has done the work before. if you tell the owner that you did a transom stringer job on your boat....plus did a bunch of motor work and its running great right now....
you will get the job at the marina....hands down.
quite frankly......i would rather hire a student that has done hull and motor work (rather than just help his dad) that way he could do real jobs for me and not just sweep the floor and move boats around.

and i understand i'm just eager i like to work on boats. it's fun for my to learn and stuff like that. ill just keep working on my boat and stuff and work my way up the ladder

that can easily come off....and the gell is still underneath.....it can be easily be re surfaced.....a fantastic oppertunity to learn how to sand and repair and polish a boat !

which is what you would be doing if you worked at a marina.....

You see, sbl - that's the problem. You know you can't gel coat over paint but have you tried removing any to see what's underneath? But that's the last thing to do. If you don't motivate yourself to fix the inside why are you worried about the outside? You have started 3 threads here in the past few days and you just keep wishy-washing around in all three.

A synopsis;
I'm junking the boat, I'm fixing the boat, back to junking, I'm fixing the motor - an ongoing theme that is just that, a theme not reality, I'm gonna be a motor repairman, what's a good boat for my busted motor, is an aluminum boat good for me, no I want glass, gel coating a boat you're gonna junk etc.

Will you finish something, anything. The absolute best thing you can do is fix the boat right, fix the motor right and come back here and prove us wrong. Maybe you won't be dismissed as just a dreamer and might be taken seriously.

Yes, its possible. But first you have to go to school to learn how to do it. Asking how to fix each project on the internet will get you nowhere.

A young friend of mine did exactly that. He worked part time after school at the local marina washing boats and such. He convinced the owner to send him to school and pay the tuition. When he came back he worked for the old man for years and now he owns his own marina and is doing quite well.

Rustoleum will work just fine, if the boat is prepped and the primer and paint are applied well.
I haven't waded in on too many "smallboatlover threads" because, frankly, they wear me out.
I think that the guys here are tired of your lack of progress in the general "listening and growing up" part of life.
Look, all of us were young guys once, believe it or not, who did generally dumb stuff over and over again. Most of us got over it by listening and sometimes believing in what other people told us. On this forum, there is about 20 centuries worth of boaters' accumulated knowledge and experience. If you can digest and listen to what they say, you may progress and the guys will cut you some slack. Otherwise they will keep treating you like a red-headed step-child.
We have one poster, coolguy, who started posting when he was 13. He initially had some of the same issues with general English grammar and the inability to use the shift key, but he rapidly started to get with it and write in complete sentences and use punctuation. He also learned, by listening and asking well-thought out questions, to completely rebuild outboards and boats on his own. He progressed, and still is progressing, and will probably be nobody's burden as he grows up.
Hopefully you will also progress as he did.

Spelling, grammar and punctuation go a long way in business! If you can't even spell "business", how do you expect to run one? Stay in school kid. Having dreams is great, following up on your dreams with the proper focus and education is stellar! Get your education and the rest will fall into place. Without it, you will struggle through life while others with more experience and education will pass you by.

The takeaway from all these threads is to focus on SCHOOL and then maybe go to marine mechanic school if you want to work on boats for a living.
Don't go picking up any more junk till you get rid of what you have.

Your best bet to start this would be to buy a cheap working engine. Then fix it up with new spark plugs, a cleaning, paint and polish.
Making it look pretty will not cost much and the worst case should be you can sell it for what you bought it for. Best case is you might double your money. Buy it cheap and take the time to detail it not disassemble it.
If you start on repairs you might wind up with a bunch of expensive parts in a box and you are out the cost of the engine and the parts.
