Capri Restorer,

(Thanks again for the replies.) The drive on my boat is a VP 270. I had a question about the drive also. I recently put the main belt on the front of the engine (alternator-cylinders). The prop turns freely in a reverse direction, but it is very hard to turn it in the right direction. It did not do that until I put the belt on the engine. Will the bearings need to be replaced, or is it just the belt on the engine.

Will this affect the engine also??

You asked me this question in the restoration forum and I will try to answer it here. How are you turning your prop with the starter cranking the engine or by hand? I have never tried to turn my prop with the out drive in forward or reverse. I cannot imagine it being very easy. I assume the belt you are speaking of is the accessory belt. That or the timing belt should not affect what goes on with the stern drive. Are you sure the sterndrive was in neutral? The prop should turn freely in either direction with the sterndrive in neutral. You should not be able to turn the prop by hand with the engine in forward or reverse.

Yes the engine is in neutral. I think it might be a bad bearing in the outdrive. I have checked all of the wiring also. The problem is the solenoid right by the starter. I will try to get a replacement this weekend. Will there be anything I will need to do before I start the engine (it has been sitting for 10 years).

Capri,

There are aftermarket manuals by SELOC and Haynes for the Volvo Penta engines and outdrives. The SELOC covers 1968 through 1991 and the Clymer covers 1968 through 1993 Both manuals cover all of the engines and Volvo Aquamatic stern drives used by Volvo Penta. They are not as thorough as the Volvo manual but are a big help trouble shooting and making repairs. I prefer the SELOC. They sell for about 30 dollars or so and I believe can be had through iboats. The help me keep my AQ125A going strong.

You can use those manuals if you want to make some mistakes. Like the distributor rotation on the 125. They have it backwards! You can chase your tail for a long time if you use it to put your wires back on. They are chock full of mistakes like that.

Don't ever use those manuals other than maybe to find the location of a part. I'd NEVER use them for a procedure.
