I have a 1983 Volvo Penta AQ125 engine (I think). It will not make a sound when you turn the key (there is no response). It has also been sitting for over 2 years. Will this cause a problem?? It is also missing the tilt/ trim mechanism. Will this cause a problem, and how much do they sell for (new or used)?? Has anyone experienced these problems or does anyone know about them??

Starter problem:
1) Dead battery
2) Poor battery connections
3) Battery switch off
4)Bad slave solenoid
5) Bad Starter solenoid
6) Faulty safety nuetral switch
7) faulty key switch
8) Faulty engine wiring
9) Blown fuse or circuit breaker
10) Corroded/broken battery cables

Sitting for over 2 years: you will likely need to do the following:

1) Replace the battery
2) Replace the water pump impeller
3) Rebuild the carb
4) Drain and clean the fuel tank
5) Replace all fuel filters
6) Check all fluid levels
7) Get all the dead rats and birds out

Trim and Tilt:

Depends on how much of it is missing. Could be $300 - $400 or more.

You may want to see if the engine will turn by hand first.Pull the spark plugs and put a oil in the cylinders.
Do you get any clicks or anything when you try to start it?

The engine turns freely and the battery is brand new. I know it is not faulty iring, because the wiring is still in its original condition ( it has never been messed with). I looked at the starter today, and I noticed that it was coated in rust. Does this mean that the starter might be bad?? I am also questioning the type of engine this Volvo is. I have pictures of the engine.

Capri,

There are aftermarket manuals by SELOC and Haynes for the Volvo Penta engines and outdrives. The SELOC covers 1968 through 1991 and the Clymer covers 1968 through 1993 Both manuals cover all of the engines and Volvo Aquamatic stern drives used by Volvo Penta. They are not as thorough as the Volvo manual but are a big help trouble shooting and making repairs. I prefer the SELOC. They sell for about 30 dollars or so and I believe can be had through iboats. The help me keep my AQ125A going strong.

I made a mistake, I don't believe Haynes has a manual for the Volvo Penta. I meant Clymer's

Thanks for the replies (and advice). I looked at the engine today, and I think it might be a faulty starter (it is almost rusted through). If it is not the starter, could it be the ignition switch??

You need to do some very basic diagnostics. One step at a time.

1. Do you have electrical current, to the starter, with the key switched to "start"?

Just because the wiring is original does not mean it is not faulty.

My starter (AQ120B) looked the same and was fried. Wouldn't turn over at all when i bench tested it.

Rich at S.E.A. Manufacturing (ebay Store) can rebuild it for you. He did mine and stands behind his work. You cam get his phone number from his ebay store.

Re: Is anyone good with Volvo Penta Sterndrives??

I am not sure if there is any current towards the starter. It is dead there are no noises when you turn the key. I know the electrical works, because the "Drive Lift" light turns on and the insturments respond. My nav light and the bilge do not work either, it is just the blower, the tilt/ trim lift, and the insturments. I have noticed that some wires were unplugged from the fuse box. I would plug them back in, but I do not know the order they go in. Does anyone know a place were I can get a wiring diagram for an old Bayliner??

You need to get a Volvo service manual. Then start measuring and recording voltages at the key switch and the starter. Then post them here.

It's not in the bayliner wiring, it's in the Volvo wiring. A couple of weeks earlier in this thread I gave you links to how to test the starting system and to the OEM owners manual which has wiring diagrams.

Did you even look at them??????????

Re: Is anyone good with Volvo Penta Sterndrives??

I looked at the links. I think it is not a matter of wiring. I think it is more of a starter issue. It would not turn freely when I tried to dry start it. I am pretty sure this is the issue because I can hear a response from all of the wiring, even if the component doesnt work. I can hear a click in the tilt/ trim mechanism spot (even though the mechanism is not there). It also shows a response on the voltmeter. When I turn the key, the needle in the voltmeter responds like there is an electrical current being sent to the starter. I think it would be a wise move to replace the starter (even if this is not the issue for some reason). I will right back when I get the voltage tests. I have a portable voltmeter amd a Clymer's Volvo Penta shop manual. I will right back shortly.
