Re: Is a 35 HP Mercury outboard enough to go tubing behind?

sorry guys...havent been back here since like...SEPTEMBER!!! i talked to my parents and they said they would also like to get a bigger motor for the boat so my dad can go fishing on the Chippewa and Castle Rock Flowages for walleyes. They said something about a 50 or 60 HP Honda 4-stroke. are these good motors? how much do they run as far as price? are they easy to maintain? (ive never run a 4 stroke!) any other things i should/want to know? any advice is very helpful!!!

I would go with a four stroke for fuel economy and quietness. They are a little more expensive. Hondas are good motors but they are kind of expensive. I have a 17ft Aluminum Boat(unknown brand) with a 50hp Yammie four stroke and it runs great. Good Luck

MercMan, I am very familiar with your boat. Although the 4 stroke seem like the way to go, I would opt for the 2 stroke for your boat. The extra weight of a 4 stroke will have an adverse effect on your light boat.

We just re-powered a friends boat, went from a 4 -stroke to a 2 stroke, dropped down 10 hp, and changed brands, saved almost 100 pounds in the process. His boat has actually picked up a few mph. The weight capacity in that boat isn't very high and you don't want to overload it with friends and equipment.

You will save lots of weight and money by going with the 2 stroke. Then save the money for a big 4stroke on the next boat the family buys.

They have a great price on a 2002 60 hp Merc, $4199, on this iboat site. Click the outboard logo on the bottom of the page and check it out.

Re: Is a 35 HP Mercury outboard enough to go tubing behind?

Mercman:
Check out my earlier post to you in August. I have this boat as well and have a 70hp EFI Suzuki 4 stroke and will do 37mph with a 17 pitch prop. Could easily run an 18 pitch if I wanted more top end. I moved my starting battery up front to better distribute the extra weight. My boat has more pull and smoother acceleration than my friends 18ft edson FG with an older 140 johnson 2 stroke. I had a 2 stroke 55hp which was much lighter for sure (by over 100lbs) but this 70 hp 4stroke has alot more get up and go than my 55hp and gets much better fuel economy to boot. Merc has a 60hp EFI 4 stroke and Suzuki has a 50hp EFI DOHC 4 stroke if you're concerned with the extra weight.
Another friend had the Classic 16DLX with a 75hp Mariner 2 stroke which was a pretty heavy engine and the boat handled it no problem. The classic 16 is rated to a 75hp motor. One thing is for sure is I would never got back to a convensional 2 stroke from my 4 stroke.

Re: Is a 35 HP Mercury outboard enough to go tubing behind?

One thing I forgot to mention is remember that all 4 strokes as well as all 2 strokes are not equal even at the same horsepower. The smooth acceleration and powerband of a engine with EFI will not be equalled by a carbed motor. It's not to say that a carbed engine like a Honda is not good but it will not be as smooth in a variety of hot, cold and humid conditions as an EFI engine. There is a reason all automobiles engines are fuel injected today. You won't miss the smoke, noise and oil slick from the 2 stroke engine as well. You won't be sorry to take the step up. I know it was the best thing I did in respect to boating.

Re: Is a 35 HP Mercury outboard enough to go tubing behind?

I looked at some used Merc EFI 4strokes...they seem to be reasonably priced at around $3500-3900 for a 60 HP. what would you consider a GOOD or GREAT deal on a newer(1998-modern) engine in the 50 or 60 HP rating??? are these $3500 motors a good buy??? thanx for the help guys!
