86 45hp Merc. Is the oil /gas ratio still 50:1 if the auto oil injector has been unhooked?I bought the motor with it unhooked, but it seems to smoke a good bit. It runs fine though. :)

50/1 is fine. Use a good grade ashless TCW-3 oil. Pennzoil Synthetic Blend at $9.99 a gallon at Wal-Mart is the best pick I've seen.

-W

CC:

I've always been told to use the manufacturer's brand of TCW-3... (this is probably a topic that's been done before but I must have missed it). You do recommend something other than Merc Marine / Quicksilver for our OB's? Thanks in advance, I value your opinion and experiences.

In Oz one of the boating mags did a test on all the different outboard oils, manufacturers and major oil company brands. Like most people, the writers thought that at the end of all the tests all the oils would be much the same. All oils were tested in all the different brands of engines too. The results were quite amazing. There were HUGE differences. The stand out winner was Quicksilver TCW-3 Premium Plus. It was the best for cleanest burning, returned the best fuel economy and the best performance. and the worst --- Valvoline.

Some of the other mechanics here will no doubt back me up (I hope), when I was doing it fulltime, I could pull an engine down and tell you the brand of oil being used, just by the deposits left. That experience follows pretty accurately to the mag article too.

Hope that helps,

Chris................

I too have had good luck with the Pennzoil Synthetic oil. I ran it in my 50hp Johnson and now in my Mercury 150XRi. Just because the engine smokes doesn't mean much- you are burning oil after all. However, that same oil must protect your engine and the synthetics do that without carboning up.

50:1 is fine- I used a one pint bottle in every 6 gallon tank for my Johnson. I also went the extra mile to add an ounce of CarbonGuard just as insurance.
