Is 40 lbs pressure enough?

Started engine for first time in 40 days. Had muffs on turned on water then started motor [started right up] didn’t see water from Pete hole after 30 seconds so shut down motor. I have 40-45 lbs pressure on hose, did I not wait long enough? Motor has been in vertical position whole time. Reason wanted to run motor was to adjust tach that I just installed.

if that 40 psi comes at 20 GPM, then maybe. if that 40 psi comes at 1 gpm, then no.

How long is that Hose? Was it completely Kink Free?
40 psi, as mentioned above is Meaningless, if the Flow is very low

And now for the Rest of the Story.... Any other work done to the Engine?

Don’t know flow Tate. No work done to engine other then hookup tach. Drag in my curb side trash bin filled up to 8 inch above cavation plate stared engine in less then 30 seconds water was coming out telltale. So I figure I don’t have enough flow. Thanks for replies. On to the next little thing.

In one you say "didn’t see water from Pete hole after 30 seconds "
The next you say "stared engine in less then 30 seconds water was coming out telltale"

Which is it?

Some motors are shy running on a hose.--Too much air in pressurized water is the reason.-------Take boat to launch ramp and test there.

When using hose with muffs no water from telltale. When in trash can with water above cav plate water came out of telltale in less then 30 sec.

The hose isn't giving you enough volume of water.

Update finally found a set of muffs that work with my water pressure and volume. Since these split water to both intake sides and have less leakage I can now run motor on hose.

My Honda has the two ports on the side of the gear case but it also has one above the prop in the underside of the cav plate . When on the muffs a lot of water comes out the hole above the prop ..... so much so that the pump wont prime or flow properly ..... I get a dribble at best from the pee hole . I put a bit of duct tape over the hole and it runs great on the muffs . ( I wont tell you that I bought new muffs and a pump impeller , which didnt really help ........already had the duct tape )
The rubber muffs can get hard with age and wont flex to the shape of the gear case and thusly dont seal well ..... which doesnt help.
