We had 2 miners trapped in a Gold Mine for 14days before they were rescued.
Last Sunday the interview with them lasted on TV for about 2 hours.
Their story was absolutely amazing.
These 2 blokes were just 2 good strong Aussie working type characters, and although there were some sorrowfull moments, most of their account was, I won't say amusing, but it did make you laugh.
The interviewer (woman) was just taken a-back, and on several occasions could not contain here laughter.
Their attitude was incredible.
I was sceptical of this interview when it was advertised, as I sort of expected crying sobbing men, hugging each other: you know, the normal B/S stuff that TV loves, but these 2 wern't having any of that.
If you get the opportunity to see this interview, do watch it...you will be amazed at these guys...and if you get only edited highlights showing them upset, then keep in mind, that accounted for about 5% of the complete interview.
Don't miss it.
They are amazingly normal characters which we can all learn from and admire.
Cheers
Phillip

Thanks for the heads-up Phillip. Will certainly watch if the opportunity presents itself. Sounds like exactly what this Yank admires most about the Aussie character.

Yes KP, I watched the whole thing in fascination. Pity Channel 9 had to use Tracey Grimshaw as the interviewer, can you imagine it if they brought in Michael Parkinson from the UK or even Andrew Denton from the ABC... would have gone from being a good interview to truly great. You have to take your hat off to the two blokes and I believe they deserve their $3 million fee... now I hope the mine management looks after the family of the miner that didn't make it to the same extent.

I'd love to see it and will keep an eye out for it. BTW, it was covered by the US news on a daily basis. We were all pulling for them . . .

Phil. I guess that we can only be thankfull that Eddie didn't choose to interview them.
The guys were really lucky and deserve the payment. I certainly would not live in that cage for two weeks for any money.
The media however have shown what a bunch of lowlifes that they are. An item on Ch9 news the other day the miners were asked if the mine should be reopened. One of the miners (Russell I think) was quoted as saying "I would not go down the mine again", however in the compleate quote as played on ABC radio Russell said "I would not go down the mine again, however I would like to see the mine reopened for the sake of the town"

I would guess Eddie had a lot of time with them before-hand, and decided he was not going to put himself in an uncontrollable position.
As for Parkinson: I don't think he would have controlled those 2 any better than Tracy did.
To me, they demonstrated a natural take-no-B/S attitude which seemed to be just part of their everyday life......probably like most of us. Tell the truth and make the best of a bad situation and get on with it.

Remember the bit...

Tracey(interviewer) Did you at that point think you were going...(interupted)
Guy Aoh yes..yes, I really lost it at that point, really lost it, I..(interupted)
Guy B Yep he did, and I told him if he didn't cut it out, I'd give him a great big kiss
Laughter all round.

Then when Tracey was asking them about the last letters they were writing to their families.
Guy A I wrote mine on my overalls and it was etc etc (personal)
Guy B Yep it was...it was ....
Tracey did he share the letter with you
Guy B Nope, I was holding the light.
Laughter all round

For our American mates, this is the way the interview pretty much went for 2 hours, very serious of course but these 2 were honest and both had a great sence of humour.

You are right of course Whaley, our media have a lot to answer for....their choosing of parts of comments to suit their needs, and the inaccuracies they fed us throughout the 14 days.

I still admire those 2 blokes for their attitudes.

Maybe we should put up some more "one-liners" they said for our American friends.

Cheers
Phillip
