Intermitting Sparking

HI,

Help!!! I have a 98 Johnson 3 cyl 25 hp. The motor only seems to be running on 1 or two cylinders.

When we pulled out the spark plugs and test the spark by turning over the engine, we get very bright strong blue spark but only intermittently. We will turn it over first time, good spark, second time, good spark, third time no spark. Forth time, good spark, fifth time no spark and so on.

The spark alternates intermittently like this on all the cylinders.

we have been working for a long time and have no idea.

an easy way to check the spark is to run the motor(with earmuffs of course)and check with a timing light hooked up. you should be able to hear as well as see with the light when the engine is not firing. it could be a coil. you could swap coils to see if the problem moves to the other cylinder. if it doesn't, it may be the powerpack. hope this helps
