I have a new to me 1975 Chrysler 45 hp with Magnapower. While in a test tank it sometimes starts instantly and runs perfect, other times it won't start at all just cranks and cranks. Battery is fully charged and terminals are clean and has new spark plugs. Points? Coil? Any thoughts to narrow my search would be appreciated. Thanks.

HEllo Bob and welcome to Iboats. When you try and start the motor are you choking it? Choking is done by pushing the key in. You should here a click noise as the solinid in the motor just below the carb engages. IF so is the primer bulb getting hard when you squeese it? How old is the gas in the motor?

Re: Intermittent starting on Chrysler 45hp

Hi. Thanks for the response. The engine did have fresh gas and I was choking it to start. With my timing light, and then pulling the plug it did not appear to have any spark. Just received a manual bought on ebay for the engine. Went through the suggested tests in the ignition section. Everything checked out fine until I got to the ignition switch which wouldn't light up my tester. Pulled it off to replace. Hopefully this was responsible for the occasional start/mostly no start situation. Great forum, hopefully I won't need it a lot!!!

You probably have surface corrosion on the internal contacts-

I had a similiar problem with my ignition switch b/c when I bought my boat it had sat for 7 years-- I sprayed liberal amounts of pb blaster, let it sit overnight then kept working the key back and forth and now it works like a champ-

I replaced the switch on my '70 Chrysler last year and starting problem solved.
