I'm getting ready to start tearing the interior out on my 1976 Campion 17' runabout. I've bought a set of Wise lounge seats and I plan to build a motor box, side panels and jump seats for the back. The reason for this is that I don't like the current configeration of the interior and it's looking a little on the shabby side.

I'm not sure the what the best approach would be for building the motor box. I thought plywood covered in either vinyl, fiberglass or carpet. All with a cusion on top. I'm kind of leaning to trying to make a smooth fiberglass surface but wonder what others have done. What thickness of plywood should I use? Can I insulate the box with Reflectix?

I will also be making new side panels which will be covered in vinyl with a storage shelf build in. Would 3/8 plywood be adaquate for this? I scanned through about 100 different posts but couldn't find any thorough decriptions on how I could make these panels.

So I guess what I'm looking for is some thoughts and/or direction on how to approach this. I'm pretty handy with wood working but most of this will be uncharted territory.

Thanks.

a week? heck it took me a month to read it! I used 3/8 to build seat bases so for side panels I would agree with oops on 1/4" they have no structural value and unless your expecting the kids to kick the heck out of them 1/4" should be plenty sufficient! the nice thing about redoing something is you can do anything you imagine...on my skeeter I removed the center portion of my bench added a center console with a glove box and placed a 24 gallon permanent fuel tank under it. Let the creative juices flow and make it your own!

Making it my own is a big part of the plan.

The boat I've acquired is in pretty good shape. The floor and stringers have been replaced and after rebuilding the carb last year she runs pretty good. A few tuning issues and I think that we'll be in food shape.

What is the best way to attach carpet to the inside of the hull? I'd also like to paint the floor and was wondering if there is an easy product that I can just brush or roll on? I'm not looking for perfection but a decent finish would be nice.
