Re: Interesting Read on Global Warming...

They don't want to hear/consider it EE. To many liberals America bad, America defiler is their perceived ticket to Heaven. They can't get there by their belief in God because in their minds he does not exist. God is just a crutch that poor deluded, non-critical thinking right wingers cling to. They are too smart for that.

If is not a ticket to Heaven issue then it is a 'bring America down to it's lowest common denominator' issue. The further back into the economic dark ages they can sink us, the more we will need them to take care of us.

Nice little piece of propaganda eeboater. The opinion article you referred us to was written by Richard Lindzen, a man that will say whatever you want for $2,500 a day. :p

The following is a little history on Lindzen

--------------------------------------------------
Dr. Richard S. Lindzen is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology, Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a global warming skeptic.

His academic research involves studies of the role of the tropics in mid-latitude weather and global heat transport, the moisture budget and its role in global change, the origins of ice ages, seasonal effects in atmospheric transport, stratospheric waves, and the observational determination of climate sensitivity. [1] (http://www-eaps.mit.edu/faculty/lindzen.htm) He has published numerous papers regarding meteorologic and atmospheric topics. [2] (http://www-eaps.mit.edu/faculty/lindzen/PublicationsRSL.html)

Ross Gelbspan, journalist and author, wrote a 1995 article in Harper's Magazine which was very critical of Lindzen and other global warming skeptics. In the article, Gelbspan reports Lindzen charged "oil and coal interests $2,500 a day for his consulting services; [and] his 1991 trip to testify before a Senate committee was paid for by Western Fuels and a speech he wrote, entitled 'Global Warming: the Origin and Nature of Alleged Scientific Consensus,' was underwritten by OPEC." [3] (http://dieoff.org/page82.htm)

In November 2004, climate change skeptic Richard Lindzen was quoted saying he'd be willing to bet that the earth's climate will be cooler in 20 years than it is today. When British climate researcher James Annan contacted him, however, Lindzen would only agree to take the bet if Annan offered a 50-to-1 payout. Subsequent offers of a wager were also refused by Pat Michaels, Chip Knappenberger, Piers Corbyn, Myron Ebell, Zbigniew Jaworowski, Sherwood Idso and William Kininmonth. At long last, however, Annan has persuaded Russian solar physicists Galina Mashnich and Vladimir Bashkirtsev to take a $10,000 bet. "There isn't much money in climate science and I'm still looking for that gold watch at retirement," Annan says. "A pay-off would be a nice top-up to my pension." jimonica,

Thank you for proving every single word in Mr. Lindzen's op-ed piece...

The article discussed the fact that the alarmists immediately try to trash anyone who attempts to provide a view that is against the theory of global warming.

I couldn't have written your response any better -- Thats almost laughable!

Sean

As I've always said, only man, in his infinite arrogance, could actually think we can destroy the planet. We can't put a dent in what one disaster such as a volcanic eruption can do to the atmosphere. But, volcanoes do not have political followings.

It's also interesting how that it's only industrialized Europe and the US that are capable of such dastardly deeds. The former Soviet Union and China are virtual cesspools of polution.

But, that's OK.

Our collective guilt tends to overide any common sense on this and other issues.

Yup. But keep in mind that at one point a single volcano is believed to have been responsible for bring the human population of the entire world down to something like an estimated 3000 people. The implication being there is lots of room for people to mess things up a real whole bunch and still not be as bad as a volcano.

You know that saying; don’t excrete where you eat. Well, this isn’t rocket science; global warning or not, messing up where you live probably isn’t a good idea. Reference Kyoto Japan 50 years ago and the birth defects from there.

I'm not buying into global warming, yet. Besides, if it were as bad as the knee-jerk alarmist would have us believe we are past the point of no return and all life on Earth is already doomed. We might as well go out with a hell of big party!
;)

Dj,nobody doubts for a moment that earth will survive men.The main reason for worry is that man will not survive himself!!
Pollution and global warming are there. Not just in America and Europe as you correctly point out.In the interest of our own survival we should work on improving the situation and encourage others to do the same. Not sit back and point fingers elsewhere.

That may be a true statement. We CAN'T destroy the Earth, but we can make it miserable to live on. Agreed. One of my points is that it is NOT a FAIR or level playing field.

The USA and Western Europe have/are/done/doing everything within our power to quell polution. The USA is one heck of allot cleaner than it was in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Man's collective memory is VERY short.

On the other hand, our economic rivals (Eastern Rim) "developing countries" could give a damn about polution. It ISN'T IN THEIR PLANS to deal with it. They have a huge resource of people of which the leaders care NOT A WIT about. It's pure economics/power.

We (US) are strangled with regulation, not only environmental, but legal.

The Western countries have found effective ways to deal with polution from manufacturing and research. Our rivals have not and will not.

While we struggle to survive, with nooses around our necks, we'll be surpassed as a Superpower.

In the "collective" mindset, that is a good thing. Not in mine.

BTW, Global Warming is just as much of an issue as to what political leaning you have. Scientific fact points both ways. We only hear (mostly) one side.

I have a hard time believing that in my 47 years, on this planet, that we went from worrying about the next ice age to an overheated planet. My 47 years isn't even a blink on the scale. But, my objective is NOT TO DESTROY western dominance. For many, it is.

Re: Interesting Read on Global Warming...

eeboater,

I don't know why I got myself involved with this discussion, it's been debated adnauseum on these pages. If nothing else has been proven, at least we know this, the only scientist that are willing to go on record in questioning global warming are in the back pockets of the fossil fuel industries. As with Richard Lindzen.

DJ,

After doing a little searching on the effects of volcanoes, I found something that might interest you. Apparently the tiny particles that volcanoes spew into the air keep the sun's rays from reaching the earth and contribute to global cooling. The greenhouse gases emitted into the air from man burning fossil fuels keep the warm air from escaping into the atmosphere. Thus contributing to global warming. Your use of volcanoes to debunk global warming is somewhat analogous to Ronald Reagan using trees emitting carbon dioxide into the air to debunk air pollution.

jimonica,

Did I relate volcanoes to Global Warming? NOPE! I related volcanoes to atmospheric catastrophies/disaters. Reading and comprehension are two different things.

Anyone should know that cloud cover would relate to cooling. Maybe I'm assuming too much.

How then, do/did we deal with the forest fires, of magnificent magnitude, over the ages?

How did we deal with the natural methane gases from swamps that "supposedly" covered much of the Earth, in the early ages?

How did we deal with the methane gas from the American Buffalo, the dinosaurs, for that matter?

All of thoes gases are "supposedly" supposed to be adding to Global Warming. The trouble is, we cannot quantify it, and never will.

All the while, you completely glossed over the REAL culprits of polution. Emerging third world countries.

Global warming aside, those societies have NO regard for the environment and COULD make our lives miserable. But, WE don't care. As long as it's not us.

Amen to that! But you can do your part to help usher in global communism and the redistribution of wealth, um, I mean reduce pollution, by supporting the Kyoto Treaty...

Yeah, right! Just what America's economy needs right now; garroting by pollution credits.

Re: Interesting Read on Global Warming...

I think dj meant "western dominence." Like john wayne right? Or maybe he meant western dominence beeing its the good ole american greenback that talks in this world has been since ww2 and hopfully will continue and all our allys as well like canada and brittian the pound and canadian dollar dont fall in the world economy they dominate just as much. And hold ther value. So you can either live in a world dominated by freedom loving and inspiring country like th US and our true allies IE CANADA AND ENGLAND or you can live in a world dominated by a country like China for example they have a great human rights track record. What we choose is our destiny. I choose freedom..

brine,

Western "dominant" culture, is that in which FREEDOM is paramount. With that freedom came power, via "individualism", to a point.

Western ideals would not be seeked, by so many, if it weren't so appealing. No other county, on the planet comes close the the magnet that the US is.

Canada and the US have our differences on what "freedom" means.

Freedom, is a North American phenom.-Canada included.

The rest of the world looks on, in wonder, as our population mocks, ridicules and debates our leadership. But, we have that right. That's the whole point.

Individual rights.

Solid,

I agree, somewhat.

One thng is true, China will NOT change its stripes. We can be as NICE as possible-to no avail. Their policies are unchangeable.

They have survived, unchanged for hundreds of years. They have NO intention of changing their ways.

We do.

Is theirs better, IMHO-NO. How many millions have died because of their policies?

The difference is that our leadership cares-somewhat. Theirs cares not in the least.

Re: Interesting Read on Global Warming...

I couldnt agree with you more DJ tahts exactly what I meant. China will never change so we must remain dominant, or if we dont and we allow china or a country like them to dictate world policy just think of the world we would live in.. I wonder if half the people that write and think these insane ideas are even thinking. How can you call youreself and american and not cheerish the ideals of freedom. Is this what federal education is teaching our kids? I heard people actually were complianing about how much a CEO of a gas company was making. And they thought it would be a good idea to start puting caps on the amount of money CEOs can make. I mean what comunist country are these people from. This is still america right? That land were you can be what you want and make you dreams come true. Or are we truly turning into a socialist country. Please tell me the damn hippies havent screwed this country that bad. All of youre generation IE The 60s/70s should have sent those damn hippies away before they ruined this country. How this country could produce such a worthless anti american gutless draft dodgin generation is beyond me. I cant wiat til there all sitting in there organic dirt nap. Im sorry but Im so tired of there bs rederick..And yes when I die my casket will be draped with an american flag and I hope there is an american heven that I can go to..

Re: Interesting Read on Global Warming...

Seems GM is making a positive step forward. They lost about 1 billion in the first quarter of last year. This year only about 380 million. Reason? The sale of SUV's and Pickup trucks overseas.

So lets face it, the USA is exporting pollution and killing the planet. Come on guys, get with it. SUV's are killers. ;)

Seems the sales are off 23% for the toyota prius for the same time period. Where is the government?
