Folks,

A friend has a 1998 200 HP Evinrude that appears to have a hesitation problem at operating temperature. The trouble sounds familiar to me, as my 1988 OMC 225HP exhibited the problem a few years ago. Read on..

What occurred a few years ago was engine hesitation due to the ignition pack overheating. I was advised to remove the rear noise insulation from under the cowling. Evidently, the insulation was sufficient enought to prevent the ignition pack from cooling, and overheating would result.

I removed the insulation from the rear of the cowling, and problem solved.

This gentleman is having hiccups after very hard use. The Pee indicator is solid.

We theorize one of two problems: Fuel contamination/blockage (checking) or spark troubles.

Before I recommend similar removal of insulation to this friend, could you kindly confirm this is "the right thing to do" for the later model 'Rude engine? (Will not remove any insulation until we confirm the overheat problem, of course.)

Many thanks,
Ken

Re: Insulation under Cowling + overheating

I personaly have never heard of removing the insulation. these engine's depend on water cooling, and I can't see where this would have any effect. As for the hiccup, this is caused by a lean running condition. I would first start with a snyc. & link, plus check all recirc. hose condition, and the recirc. valve's them self. If this check's out, I would look for a dirty carb. I'm ahead of my self here, do a spark, and compression test first.
