I was looking to install an hour meter on my Tahoe Q6 and stumbled across the Mercury Smartcraft system. Has anyone installed this on your Tahoe? I bought the boat used (2006 Q6 S/F) and would like to install this to monitor the engine and also can figure out how many hours are actually on the motor. Any help?

Yeah thanks, its all as clear as mud. It is hard to find detailed info for specific install of the smartcraft on sterndrive applications. There is more for outboards. I have sent an email to mercury with my engine serial info. Hopefully the manufacturer will have more detail. Thanks.

Here is the reply from Mercury

"Thank you for contacting MerCruiser.

The MerCruiser Smart Craft system is not compatible with NMEA 2.3 and later. There are several options available as to the type of system you would like to install. You can view these options from our web site. Once you have decided on the system you want to install you will need to choose the color and size of the gauges and if you would like to add sensors to your product to collect additional information. For a single engine installation you will need a system monitor or a system tachometer and speedometer, a data harness (available in 20 and 30 foot lengths) and a horn assembly.

The data harness will plug into the engine harness.

The suggested list price for the Tachometer gauge (gray & black) is $354.45 for part number 889222K23.

The suggested list price for the Tachometer & Speedometer gauges (gray & black) is $857.90 for part number 889223K34.

The suggested list price for a 20 foot data harness is $93.89 for part number 879982T20.

Please feel free to consult your local authorized MerCruiser Dealer for other options that can be added. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact MerCruiser Customer Service"

I located the CAN LINE connector on the back of the motor. (No easy task by the way) So now it is just locate the parts and install. The lengths for the harness comes in 10 and 15 foot also. I will be getting the 15 foot length instead of the 20 foot lenght. All this when I just set out to install an hour meter. Why didn't Tracker put an hour meter on these boats?

I know what you mean, I am sure that the price of parts and labor to install both is similar, takes 10 minutes to wire in a complete smartcraft display....

Suprising it has an MPI and no hour meter. At least the hours can be read off the engine if needed since it is an MPI. That is a lot of money for that technology. I wonder if they sell at list or less.

That is what this system does, it isn't just an hour meter. They supply all of the info from the computer, hours, pressures, temperatures, even trouble codes and failures!

It is an amazing system. I have the SC 1000 tach and speedo AND the SC5000 system view panel. I have the digital paddle wheel sensor and the system is connected to my GPS chart plotter. I can set the speed by paddle wheel and the engine will automatically throttle up or down to maintain speed when trolling, whether in swells or turning into wind. I can select a way point on the GPS and automatically the engine computer will read that data, monitor fuel flow and fuel remaining and let me know exactly how much fuel I will burn to that way point based on the current settings. The fault analysis on the SC5000 is very precise. For example, I was having an issue with one of my direct injectors and it would read "a direct injector has stopped working electrically, return to port immediately" my dealer was unable to find anything wrong. I installed the SC5000 and my very first trip out I got this message "direct injector #5 has stopped working electrically, short to ground" I was able to swap injectors and fix it myself! (I actually just needed to put one of my other injectors in that location, the computer just didn't like it in that location!)

The response from Mercruiser said that the Smartcraft system wasn't compatable with NMEA 2.3 or higher. My Lowrance is NMEA 0183 version 2.0, so I am assuming I can connect my GPS if I get the system tach or SC5000. Can the system monitor be connected to GPS?

we should try to keep this conversation together in the other thread,

You will be able to connect your GPS to the system, I havent heard of many people using versions of NMEA, I assume they are versions of NMEA 0183, obviously NMEA 2000 doesn't work! The system monitor does not connect to GPS.

I am with you, I recognize it is more than just an hour meter. The other stuff seems pretty much expected but I really like that it spells out the exactly what is wrong in the trouble code. I don't think any of my cars can even be that specific.

Re: Installing Smartcraft on the Tahoe w/ 4.3 MPI

I have finished installing the Smartcraft System Monitor. I installed it where the original tachometer was. It looks and works great. I will be doing the fine tuning of the monitor programming when I am on the water. I now know my motor has 86 hours, not bad for a 2006!

Mccownk, nice install. You`ve got that boat looking sweet.I don`t have the mpi on my boat, or an hourmeter. Is that system avalable for carbureted models?

Thanks, but unfortunately it will not work with the carb models. The compatable engines are available on the Mercruiser Smartcraft web site.
