Installing cpt in bass boat

I just installed carpet in a 88 GlassStream bass boat, and had trouble lining up the hinges on the lids. I've bought another boat an am going to try it again.Any tips on the hinges?

Install the hinge on the compartment door first. Use a sharpened nail or awl to poke through the carpet from the back. Position the compartment door over the opening and use the nail or awl to probe for the holes in the deck.

I used strait-pins with the little round heads when i did mine. Worked like a charm.
