Seems harder than I thought it would be. I've attached the u-joint bellow to the bellhousing. Attached the exhaust and shift cable bellow to the gimble. the hard part is attaching the water hose to the bellhousing (not much room) then getting the u-joint bellow on the gimble end. my family learned some new words today.

Everyone learns they need the large and small first aid kit when changing bellows as well as a dictionary of swear words

Actually, I did mine yesterday without incident. I did skip the exhaust bellows and used the tube though, so that was easy.

No cuts or blood involved, just a couple scrapes and an excessive amount of bellows cement on my hands.

The hose was the hardest part... I used a brush handle to stick in between the hose and the left side of the housing and pushed on the hose like a lever to get it on partway, then twisted and pushed from below to get it on there.

Plus I cut it to length first, so it wouldn't kink.

Attached the UJoint bellows to the bell housing, then to the transom (once the bellows was lined up it "snapped" into place with a hard push on the bell housing). Last thing was to zip tie the shift cable boot.

Now that it's out in the sunlight I'll inspect it again, and take it to the lake next week to see how I did.

Every year I get closer to that. Did a timing belt on the wifes car (front wheel drive Mitsubishi), and I just about quit. Once I realize how much I saved, it eases the pain a little, but only a tittle.

For what it's worth...when changing my bellows a couple years ago one of the boat yard mechanics gave me some advice. When installing the u-joint bellows, he removes the stainless steel wire from the bellows and then feeds that back in after everything is connected.

Ok, I've been at this for several hours and have no skin left on my knuckles. Is it possible to get the bellow attached to the gimble without a bellow expander. I'm trying to go from inside the bellhousing and push with my fingers, but I can't get the lip even close to the groove. Anyone with to share a secret?

For those trying to put the bellows on without that tool, yes it is possible, but the average time is 12 hours and a minimum of 2 trips to the emergency room. Usually for stitches to the hands or feet from kicking and hitting inanimant outdrive parts.

i think yer talking about putting the drive shaft bellows onto the gimble houseing on a alpha1. if so, don't know if i did it right. but putting mine on, on my 1 drive, i had the hingepins out.... that let me slide the bellhousing in(fwd) to far, therefor letting me attach my bellows to the gimble houseing......

I need more hands to do that. I can get close, but not all the way. I was just test fitting it today before i added the glue. I think it will be harder with the glue on. I'll get some extra hands and give that one a try, thanks!

Which bellows are you working on??????????
You stated not having a bellows expander, and that is only used on an exhaust bellows, now ziggy thinks you are talking about the ujoint bellows.
So, which one is it, really?????

I'm replacing both, but the U-joint bellows is the one I'm working on atm. I thought you used the expander for both, is that not the case?

I must have gotten really lucky, mine slide on with no problem. The exhaust bellow was actually easier to do than the u-joint bellows in my opinion.

Nope, the expander is only used for the exhaust bellows. The ujoint bellows is installed on the bellhousing, then pushed onto the gimbal housing. The Exhaust bellows is just the opposite.

Well, at least that's the way I'm going at it. I guess I just haven't given enough skin. Gonna get back at it this weekend.

Thanks for this one. Put some soap on it and test fit tonight, and that trick did it. I'll put on the band aids and get it done tomorrow, thanks!

P.S. my thumb knuckle is bare.
