Installing an Evinrude Lower Unit

I have repaired the water pump on my 115 Evinrude and am trying to put the lower unit back on. Everything goes great except I cannot get the tranmission shifter to reconnect. Does anyone have info on the best way to line up and reconnect the shift rod?
