Installing a tell-tale

My 62 Rude 10hp has been successfully resurrected with very little cussin', thrown tools, or hollerin'. Found great advice throughout this site that really helped. Last but not least, I would like to have a visible tell tale. A visual comfort, so to speak. I'm ready to drill, tap, and screw.....BUT WAIT!! Do I have to plug the 2 holes on the shaft where the water presently flows from? If so, would JB Weld do the trick?

No need to alter it. If it has a good pump in it and its staying cool, run it. Enjoy

Hi rkt. I do not beleive that you should plu any existing holes. Here's a great link that shows how to install a tell tale bay tapping into the thermostat housing with a 90 degree nylon elbow and then connecting a line to it and passing it out of the cowling and voila! Tell tale. I hope it helps.....

No answer, but I'll post anyway. If you are operating the motor as a tiller steer setup, you already have a "telltale." Its in the middle of the midsection and sprays water out quite visibly.

In this case, I recommend that you leave your motor alone.

I agree with this - don't fix what's not broken....you might end up breaking something. ;)

Another one for leaving the engine alone. Think of this as a reason. The flow of water through the engine was engineered to provide cooling for the cylinders. If you interrupt that you may change water flow and burn a piston or ruin the engine.

If it sprays water from the exhaust hole you're cooling the engine. DON'T screw with that. IMO!

Re: Installing a tell-tale

I don't have a problem with adding a telltale in some cases. In fact, I put one in my 1972 Johnson 65 hp motor, because I can't see the water flow any other way. I did a bunch of homework on how to do it and now enjoy the comfort of being able to glance back from the steering station on my boat, to confirm that I have water flow. That is something that makes me feel at ease, particularly when running through the thick water hyacinth that fills our bayous in late summer.

In a small tiller steer motor like the OP's, however, I just don't see the point.
