Installing a Johnson 70hp 1986 Lower Unit

Hi, I am currently deciding on how to install this lower unit. The Unit fits on fine, the hard part is connect the shift rod (which is located at the very bottom of the engine. Im having trouble figuring out how to access this without tearing a majority of the engine apart.

Any advice would be great!
