Inside numbering on a Mallory Distributer Cap

Just need to ask someone what the numbers mean inside of a mallory distributor cap. I see a number 5 and I think a number 2, so I am assuming that this is the positioning of the cap for the #5 and #2 spark plug wire.

Working on a mercruiser 165 inline 6, previous owner took cap and plug wires off. I know the firing order, but need to understand the inside numbers to I can place the cap on correctly.

Thanks,

Dianne

Those numbers of for manufacturing, and have nothing to do with where the plug wires go.

So therefore if there are no numbers on the outside of the distributor cap, you just line up the two screw holes and connect the plug wires according to the fire order. Is this correct?

Thank you

sort of, before removing the old cap mark the #1 plug wire , first plug at the very front of the motor
also mark it`s position in the old cap. Install new cap ,and using the mark called number 1, install the wires in the same position as you remove them from the old cap.

So what if there is no old cap, what do you do then?

Thanks for the great information....I am getting to be a pro finding TDC, so no problem there. One more question, if I may. The guy had a remote start switch connected to the solenoid, probably because he didn't bother to rewire and buy a new ignition switch, which I have already done, but my question would be, does this remote start switch bypass the solenoid? Question being, if my ignition coil is good, and I have a new ignition switch installed, and I still don't get engine fired, a possible bad solenoid also?

Ayuh,... That solenoid Only controls the Starter's solenoid...

If yer not getting Igntion current, the problem is elsewhere...

Depends on where he hooked up the remote starter, and which solenoid (it has 2)
Have a look at this thread, another HOW TO. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167035

PS: When finding #1 TDC, it must be on the compression stroke, don't forget, it's a 4 stroke engine, two turns of the crankshaft for 1 turn of the distributor and cam.
