I have a 120 Evinrude and think I am having a fuel problem. Should the inline glass fuel filter stay full of gas while running wide open? Mine pumps up when I squeeze the ball but when I run wide open it empties out and you can see the fuel pulsing in when the fuel pump draws it in. The motor runs fine at WOT but if i drop to 4500 rpm it runs for a minute and then seems to be running out of gas. If i open it back up, it hesitates and then starts to run fine again. It idles fine too.

I have changed the fuel filter, primer ball and fuel hose all the way to the tank to the motor. I am thinking it may be a bad fuel pump or inside of the fuel tank. The vent on side of the boat is not blocked. Would an anti-siphon valve cause this?

Any ideas?

I am certainly not a marine mechanic but from my limited boating experience (12 years - mostly sailing ) it sounds as though you are sucking air in somewhere ? you may want to check the sealing at all your fuel connections -good luck

Doctorsign is right. Also, if the primer flattens-out it is not able to draw enough fuel. This would indicate a plugged pickup tube or anti-siphon valve.
The fuel pump is also suspect here, espescially if it is the original, and the engine is over 2 years old. Alcohol-enhanced fuels devour the diaphram.

Re: Inline Glass Fuel Filter

I replaced the VRO fuel pump with a non VRO pump. It now works like new. $135 for non-vro vs. $240 for vro.

The glass filter still empties out but now refills as soon as you slow down. (It has done this since new and running right. The dealer said it is normal.) However the ball would get soft with the old pump and now stays firm. The pump on there was 11 years old.

Thanks for the help!
Brett
