Inline Fuel Filter or Water Separator

I have a 1985 30hp Johnson that I have not been running with a fuel filter. What kind of filter should I get and where should it be placed? In the parts schematic it shows an inline filter after the fuel pump but my motor doesn't have that. Do I need a water separator filter? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Did you remove the fuel in cover
on the fuel pump to see if there is
a filter in the cover?
The filter they show in the parts schematic
I think is before the pump.
When mounted properly it serves as
A water trap.

There is a filter screen right inside the fuel pump cover. Do I need a filter in addition to this?

I run one in my fuel hose. I cut the fuel line and installed it after the primer bulb.

You can get an Attwood fuel/water filter at Wally World which will do just fine cut in to you fuel line and install on transom ; makes no difference if before or after the primer bulb. I have one each way on my two boats and both work just fine.

With the crappy ethanol fuel we have today I'd defineatly install a water/seperator filter.

Yes runa filter at least, if you can find the fuel water one that is even better but definately run one or the other, as stated anywhere between the tank and engine.

I run a basic inline I got at Auto Zone and haven't had a single carb problem in 3 years, make sure you use good hose clamps and check for leaks.

Get both types, your engine will thank you!
