Zm -

Just guessing here - No one else metioned it...

Fuel pump? Try starting the motor while pumping the ball. If it keeps running then the fuel pump should be checked.

Good luck.

Yep, no difference.

I haven't tried that, but even if the pump isn't working it should run for at least a few seconds on the fuel that's in the bowls.

Re: Inline 6 just pops a little - won't start

I took my spark plug leads off tonight to do a compression check on my 2 cylinder 20 Merc. Inadvertently forgot to remember which was which. Knowing I had a 50% chance, I connected them. When trying to start it only sneezed and coughed out the exhaust ports. Sounded exactly like a sneeze. Had the plug wires backwards (Murphys Law).

What you describe sounds like that behavior. Your ignition timing, or firing order is still a suspect in my opinion.

Sounds like you have ruled out fuel issues, and you have stated before that you see good spark on all six.

Start from scratch with timing & sync, and firing sequence as others have mentioned.

I'll check the timing and pointer again, but even if it was off a few degrees it would start, wouldn't it? It does sound somewhat like my old one when the distributor seized and shredded the timing belt...

It's got to be something simple. Are you sure it is not 180 deg. off. Does #1 piston come up 2 times on one stroke? Can flywheel be off 180?
Man this would drive me crazy... Tim

Depends on your definition of "get going". :D Yes, I did get the b!tch started. The flywheel was off two holes, and the distributor was also off since I pointed it at the wrong flywheel position. It did seem to line up with the TDC mark though. It runs now, but now there's no water pressure.

Ahh...boats are so relaxing.

When you say there is no water pressure, is it when you are running it on muffs? When I run mine ('77 1500) on muffs, I show no water pressure on my guage. I only show water pressure when in the water with some speed.
Do you have a good stream comming from the tell-tale? Also make sure your pressure gauge is good. I used an air gun and blew compressed air in the tube running to the pressure gauge and found out my water pressure gauge was bad (I have a new one now).

Yes, it's on the muffs, but there's no good tell tale stream. I took the LU back off and hooked a hose directly to the water tube running up the mid section, and it still only shows 3 PSI. I'm pretty sure it's the seal around the top of this water tube that's leaking. Right now I'm in the process of taking off the powerhead AGAIN to replace it...

ZmOz,
Glad you got it running. Sounds like everyone was kind of right, it was a timing issue. Not familiar with your motor but I thought flywheels were keyed to only go on one way. I learned something to look out for. Sorry you have to tear it down again.

ED
