I have a 18 foot 60 inch wide south fork flat boat center console with a 4 foot fantail. Capacity plate says max hp is 70. But that's for a heavy 4-stroke. I've added a little weight to the boat and wondering if I should go with a 2-stroke 3 cylinder or v4? I'm looking to do over 40 mph. I've been looking for a 90-140 but I wonder if I can get away with a 75 3 cylinder or a 90hp Yamaha 3 cylinder.

A 1962 Evinrude Starflite 75 is a nice one. :D

I?m very fond of V4?s, so I?ll go for a 115 if you want to run that speed effortless....remember....less close to WOT, less fuel consumption....(most of cases, though)..

OK, Max HP is 70. Get an inline 3. You do not want the weight of the V4 nor the gas comsumption.

Why are you consideering a 90 - 140 if the capacity plate says 70 HP max. And engine weight has nothing to do with maximum HP ratings. You might want to check with your insurance carrier to make sure they will insure a boat that is overpowered (whether it is by 5 HP or 70 HP). Any of the V4 two strokes are likely going to be very close to a 70 HP four stroke so weight is a push. Properly set up and propped, a 70 Johnson/Evinrude triple or 75 Merc Triple, should easily put you at the 40 MPH target.

What Silvertip said. Do not exceed 70HP.

A JohnnyZuki DF70 4 cylinder 4 stroke should put you right at 40mph when optimized. Smooth, quiet, clean and economical.

Don't go above what the max hp rating says on the boat. Remember there are hungry lawyers out there.
