Re: Injection or Pre mix?

I've pre-mixed on every outboard that I've had without a big hassle. Once you are used to it, you can judge closely enough to put in the initial correct amount and then adjust once you fill the tank. For example, I have a 25 Gal tank and if I get down to 1/4 tank, I figure I have about 6 or 7 gal left. That leaves me 18 or 19 Gal to add oil for. So I dump in 3 pints and go to filling. When it's full, I add enough oil until I have the correct mix. This, of course, comes with experience with your own boat. Rental fleets for years did the same thing. Always had to mix your own or let the dock folks do it for you. Just a note that my current Evinrude Motor did come with VRO, but I just couldn't stand not knowing if it was really working, so I elected to go back to the old way. Doesn't seem to tie me up any more than anyone else at the dock and when I hit that throttle, I know the engine is taken care of the best way I know how. It's a personal preference thing...

Re: Injection or Pre mix?

I have been talking to a lot of the old timers in my area since my misfortune and almost all of them have elected to pre mix a well. Two of them have told me similar stories to my own. My injection system failed and motor blew 15 mn offshore. NEVER AGAIN.

KW

Before this gets too deep, let me say that almost everything I have heard about the Yamaha's injection system have been good. Very few problems. It just seems that OMC had more than their fair share of problems with the VRO system, and therefore decided against chancing it.

hmmm.... Looks like I'm going to have my first ob soon. What has to be done if you are going to bypass the oil injection system and premix?

simply disconnect the injectors. Mix the oil with the gas and plug it up as usual. I believe the worse that can happen in this senario is fouling a spark plug from putting in to much oil. Sound right?

M-

You think I could just fill up the oil resevoir with some of the premix gas?

What about using the VRO, but still squirting a little oil in with the gas? Just enough, mind you, to keep the engine from croaking. Just enough oil to allow you time to recognize the problem and shut down before the engine dies.
