Hello, this Montgomery Wards Sea King boat is eluding me in info. There is no numbers on the boat. It would be nice to know which manufacturer made them, approx year, weight restriction and size motor. It’s a very light boat comparatively. Any info on this or experience you have had would be greatly appreciated. Not all Sea King boats were made by the same manufacturer, the folded or extra lip on the rear is different than many other Sea kings. I’m baffled. 66AD4395-D105-4866-AFCF-7DEC6F0F91C7.jpeg

It'll be nearly impossible to know which of the manufacturers made it for Wards: there were around six of 'em. If there's no HIN on the stern, then that boat is pre-1972. Which means the data HERE will give you an idea; but not a complete answer.

Boat looks like it's late 60s to me, but that's a pure guess.

Lots of folks ask about information on older boats and those that are out of production. I'm not sure how the information would help though . . . it's not like you can get parts & service.

Is there particular info you are looking for? What SK posted is about the most you may find.

I’m just a bit perplexed. I have a 59 alumacraft and the metal and weight difference is a huge difference! I want to make sure the 15 isn’t too big for it safety wise and to know if even though it’s very light and thinner metal, it was actually well built boat? I’ve heard they are but since sea kings are made by different boat companies, all aren’t comparable.

Tell me if I am wrong but the only difference between a 9.9 and a 15 hp is carburation (and power)?

Meaning you could get away with that setup?

I have a 12’, 1973 in orange leaning up against the barn. Had a 5-1/2 hp Johnson Seahorse on it.

Has #450 capacity if I remember correctly

From my understanding they are the same size physically, but the 15 does provide more power.

I guess my ultimate question is, is this a decent or well built boat? It is very thin metal compared to my Flying D hull, light, but floats and feels good. The reason i want to know more is we can say sea kings are decent boats, but if they changed manufacturers, then each boat may not be comparable. The way the rear is, i haven’t seen this style before with the riveted metal together around the edge of the sizes and bottom.

the boat was designed to be used and abused and last about 15 years. its now about 55-60 years old.

decent enough for what it is.

with maintenance and care it will last another 50-60 years

since you are in Wisconsin, suggest you use the crap out of it the 4 months a year that you can boat.

my 12' duck boat is from the late 70's. its still going strong. Riveted hulls hold up ok if you don't pile it up on the rocks. Heck, mine has bullet holes in it from someone being a jerk. A couple ss screws and away I go.

LOL ... we have a couple of fiberglass rowboats from the 50s that go fine. They look awful, but they just keep on going. The nice thing about that boat of yours is that you can pretty much see everything that's going on: if it's floatin' it's workin' for the most part. The 15 may push it a little fast, so if the bottom gets banged up too much it could get a little hinky running flat out. But if you're at half or three-quarter throttle (like a 10HP would push it), that boat will absorb a lot of abuse.

Montgomery Sea King is actually a Smoker Craft I have one I used the vin numbers and it pulled it up ,One simple give away is the brackets on either end of the bench seat ,go to the smoker craft web site you will see what I mean ,Smoker Craft is owned by Starcraft but Smoker Craft is a rock solid boat that were built from the seventies to current ,looks like a 14 ft Smoker craft voyager mine is a little newer but has rod holders on the last two benches
