My buddy is looking to buy this boat for real cheap, the inobard was taken out beacuse of cracked block but a frame was built to convert it to an outboard by some guy who builds boats. It stick out about 2 feet form the boat. I looked at it and it looks soild an it floats, can anyone see any problems with that or will hte boat ride hte same as if a inobard was in there i didn't see any problems?
Andrew

The boat was designed for an inboard, having an outboard on back might throw the handling characteristics off. How did he mount the bracket to the fiberglass transom?

th frame goes inside the hull as well on the back wall. I think to help disribute the wait. what ya think?

I think this will get more responses in Project Boats.

69 if the mount is solid use it!!! weight disturbution will not affect the handling much unless your talking about a straight inboard that was mounted mid-ship! The leverage of an outboard hanging 2' off the transom just about equals the weight of an I/O mounted just inside the transom ;) Good luck & be safe

Re: Inboard to outboard conversion?

of course, there are torque vectors to deal with, leverage has its way at times ... the rotational torque is within the hull, on the inboard stringers, while the directional (thrust) vectors are distributed to the transom ... with the outboards, the whole mess seems to be going to the inboard stringers, they WERE checked for structural solidity?

Note to self: stop trying to dredge up those engineering classes when dead tired

Yer a shrink now, dammit!

Re: Inboard to outboard conversion?

Good morning, Guys...I just today picked up a 18'8" Ranger with the motor and jet missing. And, I also just found this forum.
Has anyone hung an outboard on a patched-up transom? Did you buy a store-bought mount or did you build one? Do you have any drawings of it?
I have a 125 HP V4 laying around; would that be enough to push the Ranger through the water fast enough so people wouldn't laugh?

Mornin' Jim

You should start off a new topic for your question to make it stand out.

Do a search here first, the subject has been up several times.

Also click the link in SoLittle's reply and browse the hints there.

jim, do the math ... relatively small boat, with a healthy sized motor ... yeah, the mumbling yahoos on fishin shows with 225 horsepower bass rockets will pass you like you were draggin an anchor, but think about it, 40 mph feels pretty fast when you are on water

how fast do you want to go??

Jim, just hang that motor on and go fishin'. Unless you are a pro, gots cash for days, or you are trying to compensate for small genetalia, you don't need a huge gas suckin' motor. The trick is to set it up right, and keep the rig light. Heck, if I was worried about what other boaters thought, I wouldn't dare hit the water with my Skanky Beast, easily one of the uglier boats on my lake. It still gets the job done, and thats all that really counts. Good luck...

OK Guys...I think I got it. I've never seen this done before, & thought it might turn into a can-0-worms, but maybe it's not as tuff as it seems. I'm thinking now of building the motor mount. I've seen some pictures of the store-bought ones, & I've seen a couple homemade ones a few months ago down in Marathon Florida in the keys that didn't look too difficult, but I didn't get a chance to talk with the owner...I'll give it a try & see what happens.
jim
