Inboard Prop shaft grooves

How much is too much?
I am in the process of restoring this 1988 300WE, with twin Veltvet Drive Borgs. The prop shafts are not connected to the engines yet so they slide in and out enough to see groves in the shaft(s) where the Packing rides. Is there a measurement that I can go by before I put it all together?

There should be no grooves in the shaft where the packing is.That should be smooth.
That groove you see is for the keyway that connects to the coupler.They come in different sizes from 3/16in. and up. You shouldn't have to do anything but replace the packing.You might want to have it done by someone who knows what they are doing.You can get replacement, dripless and maintainance free packing glands(one of the best things for a shaft driven boat).
Very important that the shafts and coupler and the alignment are done RIGHT.Not done right and the boat will shake BAD!!!Jerry

No, I am familiar with what a keyway slot is. These have grooves wore in the shaft where the packing meets the shaft, wore over time, probably due to overtightening. I am fairly well versed in engine alignment too, but thanks anyway.

When you pull the shaft from the engine coupler you will find the keyway. Removing the coupler from the shaft may take special tools, such as a slam hammer. A prop shop should be able to repair your shaft. Here at my favorite shop the cost would be around $60. After pulling the shaft I would replace the cutlass bearing which is pressed into the strut. Another $80.

There is no spec on the grooves in the shaft. If it leaks with new packing, then replace the shaft. If it's worn a groove where the packing goes, I would bet money the shaft is also worn where it rides in the cutlass bearing.
