i have a 1975 22’ Cruisers Barnegat. The motor is a ford 302, 5.0L

when motor is at specified Idle RPM WHEN I SHIFT IT IN GEAR IT DIES.
If I adjust the idle speed up to 1200 rpm while in gear it will run fine for about 15-20 min then die. It starts back up no problem, then the problem repeats itself. The motor has been fully tuned up, plugs, wires, disrtubtior cap, and rotor.oil change and fuel filter/water separator. I troll out on Lake Michigan with this boat and I use the inboard so if the isle is set high to keep it running then my trolling speed is to high.

any ideas on what to change or check would be very helpful.

thank you all!!!!!

Has the carburetor been re-built recently? Also with a volt meter check the voltage on the + or BAT side of the coil when running, there should be around 8 volts minimum and never any lower. Where do you get the ignition parts from?

I am not familiar with drive. If I/O it most probable has an interrupt switch like MC Alphas. Disconnect for testing only. If this is faulty, buy a new one and install.

I’m not sure if any work has been done to it lastly, I bought the boat a month ago, and have done nothing to it myself. Although the the nuts for tightening the fuel line is pretty chewed up line it’s been on and off several times.

i have not had the fuel filter off to check it, when I changed it a month ago it has pretty clean, it’s a large filter looks just like a oil filter for a truck, this was the first time I had the boat out sense I bought it. It runs PERFECT from 5 mph and up, butvtrolling at slow speeds I have to turn up the idle speed so it don’t die every 15 min. Normal Nutral idle speed forvthis motor is 650-700, I have to turn it up to 1200+ or else it dies shifting it, so what I do is shift it into gear then turn fown the idle speed, but then it dies ever 15 min.
I have not tested the #1 batters close to the alternator but I will, should I check it running???

the fuel cell is 55 Gallon aluminum, I’m goessing it would be clean, but I’ll check

tganks for your help guys!!!!

Another thing I’m confused about is the previous owner removed the mechanical fuel pin from the motor and replaced it with a electronic fuel pump, WHY??, the lines run into the filter and regulator. Not sure why they did it. But I wonder if it would be better to put the mechanical one on

If you haven't figgured it out by now the previous owner sold you a boat with a problem he could not solve. No use crying over spilled milk...just sayin' that's what happened. Now on to my thoughts. I would bet that the carb has been apart a bunch of times to no avail. My first thing to do would be to swap the carb. My thoughts are that there might be something missing inside from having been apart so much or something is just plain wrong with it...may not even be the right carb for the application.

You should try to locate the correct marine style fuel pump. I would not be surprised if the electric fuel pump is not wired with a oil pressure safety switch. You do not want the electric pump to operate when there is no oil pressure. If the carburetor should start to “flood over” and the engine stops then fuel will be going all over the engine and a fire could result.
However if the pump is wired through the safety switch then that will be fine.
Which carburetor do you have, Holley or Rochester?

OK, SO THE TEST RESULTS IN THE INTERUPTER SWITCH WERE.
It did click but hard, and the ohms meter read +1 and sometimes +2.

THOUGHTS??
