Adding an in-line fuel filter to my 71' model Evinrude Sportster fuel system . Should the filter go before or after the primer bulb?Or does it matter?

Re: in-line fuel filter

Isn't there a filter at the engine already? If so, adding another one may prevent the fuel pump from sucking fuel. Each filter represents a bit of restriction to the suction side of the pump. Two filters are not necessary.

Re: in-line fuel filter

I started running a cheapy Auto Zone inline filter 2 years ago, I put mine about a foot from the engine so you can see it but it really doesn't matter where it is put.

Yes the engine has a filter butit is pretty coarse and only keeps out the big pieces, adn in line will catch everything.

My 90 has only a screen at the inlet to the fuel pump. I added one of those cheap inline ones. I like it more as a sight bowl of sorts than anything else. Once I plumb the water separator in I'm going to remove the element and just run the glass so I can see the fuel.

Re: in-line fuel filter

I installed an inline filter on mine before the primer bulb. My reasoning was that I didn't want to push dirtly fuel through the filter, but instead limit the suction to whatever the primer can create. Probably not a big deal, but doesn't hurt anything anyway.

For several years I ran paper "fan" style filters on my system, but recently converted to the glass style with replaceable elements, and the think the glass style is better.

My engine does have a factor filter under the cowling, but it's tough to replace (wouldn't want to do it on the water), and you can't see what's going in iside of it.

I suspect that the glass filter doesn't filter as fine of particles as the factory filter, but that's OK with me, it's role is to get the big stuff out and give me an indication of what the fuel looks like.

I can tell that I have definitely filled up at a station with a rusty gas tank some time in the past, there is a lot of brown junk getting trapped in the inline filter.

Inline filter=after the squeeze bulb and as close to the carb/s as feasible. Protect the carbs from 'any' disentegrating rubber.

If you had not said that, I was. :)

Also, I would imagine as long as the holes in the filter are smaller than the holes in the carburetor jets, it should be mostly OK.

With all this I read about ethanol and fuel lines, getting a filter as close to the engine as possible seems to make a LOT of sense. I think my lines are OK, but it's still something I need to check.

The fuel/water separator type filters have made the old screen type in-line gas filters "old technology", I still have my motor mounted filter screen on my Yamaha 90C, but my transom-mounted fuel/water separator is definitely my primary filter system. It's the Walmart unit($27), easy 2 screw installation, best thing since sliced bread to prevent fuel problems! That and some Stabil Marine and you're pretty well home free, fuel-wise!

Re: in-line fuel filter

I've had my Walmart fuel/water separator on my 90HP premix Yamaha for over 4 years now and take it from me there is no problem with it filtering out the oil from the gas. And since I installed it, there is never any water or debris in the motor-mounted filter/screen, since it's all in the big filter. Best thing they ever came up with to prevent fuel problems!

Re: in-line fuel filter

...Fuel/water separators (filters) still creep me outa bit on 2 stroke pre-mix applications, my mental jury is still out on using them with any pre-mix. ....

Why? They are perfectly fine w/ pre-mix always have been. Water sep. filters predated 4 stroke and oil injection outboards. I don't know why people think they are a new development. I've personally been using them with outboards since the early 80s.
