IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

Recently I was at an anti-fishing website because I was bored out of my mind and I wanted to see how stupid those PETA people really are. And it said, eating fish causes cancer, brain damage and liver problems. Is this really true or are they trying to keep people away from fishing?

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

That's just more propaganda so you won't hurt the little fishy. I'm 42 years old and have eaten tons of fish over the years all my body parts still function just great. The only time you can run into a problem is when there is a high mercury content or other toxic pollutant in the water your fishing. This really is not a concern because marine biologist and wildlife management personnel routinely test the water we use for recreation and fishing (this is especially true when there has been a notable fish kill). Also, they eat a lot of fish in Japan and they have one of the lowest cancer rates in the world. Bottom line - including fish and fish oils in your diet can only contribute to your overall health unless the fish has ingested or absorbed a toxic pollutant or mercury.

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

Depends on where you are catching your fish! Some bays and estuaries are polluted with constituents that are carcinogenic to humans. The pollutants bioaccumulate and magnify up the food chain to levels in some sport fish that are above acceptable EPA regulations. Mercury and Selenium are good examples.

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

Fish meat is brain food.<br />We've bought up 4 kids and now have grandchildren. All fed fish a few times a week and they've all done well at school and gone on to good jobs. I can't praise enough the quality of good fresh fish caught in clear clean waters by a father and son/daughter team. This cements the values we all learnt from our fathers and the time we spent talking with our seniors fishing for our food is most valuable. I know because when my kids talk of exciting things they've done to friends the stories invariable involve fishing. it makes me proud. To all those anti-fishing people out there - Hell I didn't even know you existed - Get a life - Better yet, go **** in your own pond.<br />Ross

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

RossJ - rotflmao :D <br />Here in GA the yearly Fishing Regulation brochure(freely distributed) always lists the recommended #/lbs of species for consumption, and most everyone i know generally follows that. which is fine, since eating a nice bass a week is ok. and most species can be eaten daily. i did same thing- once went to peta site to see if they made sense. wasn't impressed. i guess until everyone else on the planet switches over to vegetarian diets, i'll be enjoying meat! i'd die first anyway, since i can't imagine a day without meat...

Those PETA idiots generally live in the city and have NO idea of how ANYTHING gets in the supermarket. Think they know how glue is made? Do they wear leather shoes? <br /><br />I like animals... I shoot them, cook them, eat them, AND wear their skins.

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

my sides were hurtin from laughin over the broccoli! hehehe :D <br />its true though, most of the yuppie people i've known in metro atlanta would never ever kill an animal, and this is usually spoken during lunch - munching on burger/pizza/subs, all with meat. it is just amazing. even my wife almost got sick when she saw me dressing a deer once, and won't eat wild game - but is a lover of chicken.... (i should bring some home from grandma's next time, and see if i can get her to eat them after seeing them alive earlier)

If you go to your state DNR site, most states will have a page on fish consumption charted for size, speices and body of water that you are fishing. It will tell how many of a species you can eat for particular size and the toxicity level of any chemical in that species. :)

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

I notice no one has mentioned the commercial fishery. Some of our favourite lakes are commercially fished regardless of it’s one of the great lakes or some of the smaller ones. I have friends the will purchase a box of fish sticks without a thought and then as me if I really eat the fish in lake Ontario. Is the route of the problem really the fish we eat or is it the pollution that our governments have allowed to big business to produce. In regards to fish stocks it mind boggling just how much our governments spend on their restocking programs. Ok I’m wondering but it’s my 2 cents.<br /><br /><br />Todd Legere

Hi folks, I can't stand PETA but the way I look at it is let them do what they to. If they're not out here fishing that just means that there's more for me. I can't help it I just like my odds better when there's less of those types around.

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

PETA had a guy dressed as a fish walking the sidewalks, in downtown Jackson, MS where I work, the other day with a sign that said "Fish Have Feeling Too". He was an obnoxious sort too! A truck load of Goat Ropers drove by and spotted him. They made the block and on their return trip one of them was in the back of the pickup with a fishing rod and when he went by he hooked the fish. Needless to say the cops got involved and the Goat Ropers got scolded and recieved a Driving Award and the fish got away. That was that morning. That afternoon guy shows up dressed as a Butterbean. The Butterbean got all up in the fish's face, yelling, carrying and on here we go!!! We had a Butterbean/Fish fight in the streets of Jackson, MS. Even made the 6:00 news!!!! It was a hoot!! The bicycle cops let em tumble around on sidewalk for a little while then broke them up and took em to the pokey.

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

The way I understand this fish thing is as follows. Unless the fish has been contaminated by its habitat or food it is one of the best meat sources on the planet. Most fish have oils that are good for your heart. Salmon are filled with Omega vitamins, shark are used to make cancer fighting drugs, etc... Eskimos have the lowest rate of heart disease in the world and they eat ............ Yep! you guessed it FISH! The heck with those PEDA freaks. We should all send them a Ted Nugent album and a can of beef jerky

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

I read a article by the AMA (American Medical Association) that said that coronary disease amongst the Eskimo population is nonexistant !<br />Their diet is primarily " Salmon ". I read this over 6 years ago, but have recently read articles<br />promoting the consumption of cold water fish such as Salmon because the oil reduces bad cholesterol levels in our bodies (causes hardening of the arteries). It is recommended that all people eat this fish at least Twice a week !!!!

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

I can't speak for all locations, but the Mich. DNR website has an Adobe download of the 2001 Michigan fish advisory. This advisory mentions the many positive attributes of eating fish as well as precautions that should be taken before doing so. Very informative and well written.

Re: IMPORTANT HEALTH QUESTION

I don't know about your lakes down there, but our lakes and rivers are riddled with mercury. There are warnings everywhere throughout our regulations. Old walleye and pike are the worst for retaining pollutants, probably cause they live the longest of our sport fish...
