We recently replaced our impeller after replacing the seals and water tube on the lower unit. We have a OMC Cobra Outdrive. Engine is running at proper temperature ranges and we have plenty of water pumping up from lake and flow is good coming in to the thermostat. The impellers offered for this outdrive don't seem to last very long.
The housing for the cobra is kind of weird, in that it is oval and the impeller spins on a metal insert that is not particularly smooth. When the engine stops the impeller is left compressed on one side. Seems they deform earlier than if the housing were round. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you using OEM parts or aftermarket? Because using OEM they last at least 3 seasons in my use...

All impeller housings are built like that. It pressurizes the water a touch to get going where it has to go. If the housing was round, you would not need a rubber impeller. It could be just like a circulating pump impeller, but it would not pump water where it needs to go.
