I'm in the middle of changing out the water pump on my '94 evinrude 48spl. The problem I'm having is that the impeller is not budging. I was going to let sit overnight with some PB sprayed on it and hope it will come off in the a.m. Anybody have some suggestions on how to get the old impeller off the shaft?

The drive shaft normally rotates clock-wise. Lock the impeller with a wise grip - turn the drive shaft COUNTER clock-wise and it should come loose.

But if you hit it with a big screw driver and hammer you should hit it CLOCK-WISE.

Thanks guys. Got it after letting some PB sit on it over night, just a couple taps and she came right off. I have read about reverse flushing the system. Is that necesary, and if so, how do I go about it?

While the gearcase is down, I remove the t stat and run compressed air, or the garden hose, up the water line, ensuring it exits at the t stat housing. Then back flush the compressed air or water from the t stat housing down.

Have seen many guys do a water pump, bolt her back up only to find out then that there is a restriction. Better to ensure there is not while the gearcase is down. Unless you like doing things twice. ;)

This is mainly when the impeller breaks apart and she overheats, but better safe than sorry.
