Ayuh,...... When reinstalling, Everything, has to be in forward,......

I use a bungee strap on the prop shaft to hold tension on the clutch, so's it Stays in forward,....

Prop won’t be on the shaft at all during that time

Bondo said when reinstalling you need to keep it from popping out of gear. If you dont keep counter clockwise pressure on the prop it will pop out of gear. You wont be able to mesh up shift mechanism or rotate the drive shaft to mesh with splines in coupler.

to remove drive put shifter fully forward. do not take the drive off in neutral

remember to remove speedo tube from drive before pulling it off

it would be worth your time to get a factory merc manual (#14) as details like this are outlined in it

Irrelevant

All mc/r/mr/alpha style merc drives must be in FWD gear for removal/install save for the few counter rotated alpha drives still out there

I use a homemade cart not wide enough to accommodate the prop so the prop has to come off for removal and stay off for re-installing. I hand turn the shaft so that the shifter stays in forward. Go slow and make sure it stays that way and lines up properly. Always in forward gear at the helm for removal and re-installation (assuming standard rotation). I believe counter rotation is the opposite but I don't have enough money to worry about that lol.
