impeller issues?

Is there anything else at all besides an impeller problem that would cause lack of circulation throughout the engine? When I put the out drive on, I'm pretty certain everything was okay in the impeller department. Is there anyway an outdrive could have internal leaks or have problems elsewhere?

I'm going to look at the impeller tomorrow, but I"m just wondering if there's anything else I should look for.

Thanks

Re: impeller issues?

anything is possible.. you might have a restriction in the hoses from an old impeller.. your manifolds/risers might be clogged with rust..

the water tube running from the pump to the upper unit might be clogged? or might have come out of the gasket connecting it to the upper.. i found that problem with mine once..

There is also the the water pump and thermostat on the engine itself. If the water pump has failed it will not pump water in the engine. It the thermostat won't open it will plug most of the water flow.

could you elaborate more on that problem?

Well, i put a new stat in already. Shouldn't it open like, right away pretty much?

Takes time for the thermo to open, the water in the block comes up to temp then it opens and lets in cool water.Pump on the engine in fresh water rarely go bad(but do).
Pull off the hose from the outdrive start motor and see how much water is pumping. If it's pumping good then the riser is probably restricted. As old as your boat is I would concentrate on the riser.Jerry

In addition to the above... how do you know it is not circulating? What is the actual problem you are having?

by riser, we're talking about on the back of the intake/exhaust manifold?

I had suspicions before I winterized the boat last fall, so while it was running, i took one of the plugs from the block loose and no water was coming out from the cooling passage, and I know they're not blocked because I drained the anti-freeze out of that hole.

Take the hose coming from the drive off at the front of engine, hold it above level of transom plate, and see if water shoots up several inches.
if so, then to the engine checking.

the only one coming from the middle of the transom to the front; the longest hose, about 1" thick.

I didn't realize what hose you were talking about until a little before now. But I took of my thermostat housing and started it, and nothing was coming through.

So, with that being said, it HAS to be an impeller issue? is there anything else that could cause this besides a bad impeller?

A plugged or kinked hose hose between the drive and transom shield, or plugged hose connector that goes thru the transom shield. A coupler with the splines missing wouldn't allow the drive to spin.

Re: impeller issues?

okay. Went and bought an impeller kit. Put all new gaskets on, got new seals put in the impeller base plate. Accoriding to a link i found on here somewhere, the impeller blades are supposed to point counter-clockwise looking from the top, so thats what I did. (and thats how my old one was too)

So I started it with that hose off the stat housing, and no water. So I took off that hose from the rear so its off completely, and looked to see if water was coming from that inlet behidn the engine, and nothing. soooo, now what?

Re: impeller issues?

Maybe the impeller is not turning. I am not sure how to test on yours but others may be able to help there.

Re: impeller issues?

well maybe thats possible??

I shot water back through that inlet where the feed hose comes from and its coming out of the lower unit.

Its coming from the drain hole at the bottom, and some here and there spots. This part is hard for me to explain, its coming out from the bottom of the lower unit, where the prop shaft comes out. Not from the actual shaft housing it doesn't look like, but around there, if that made sense to anyone. Could that be a problem?

Are you sure the tube between the upper and lower went together? They can miss.

Re: impeller issues?

welp, I got that all figured out...FINALLY!

You guys know that copper tube thats supposed to fit between the upper and lower...well I didn't...

I didn't see it on any manuals, or I chose to overlook it. Whichever the case, That copper tube was not, and has not been in, creating all of my problems. I was racking my brain!!! PULLING MY HAIR OUT! trying to figure out what the issue is.

But its all resolved, now I have more questions, but this case is closed.

Thanks everyone.
