Impeller housing too snug? Making prop and shaft very hard to turn.

Replacing impeller and when I hand tighten the housing unit to snug the propeller and shaft become very hard to turn and I can not remember if this is normal. I can turn it with a drill to check the impeller but still difficult. Should I back off the impeller unit or no

Yeah had been running great for a few months. I broke the shear pin on the prop the other day and thought I’d check out the lower unit didn’t even change anything really just couldn’t remember if it was supposed to be like that. Pretty new to this stuff. Thank you very much though.

Are you in neutral?
Yes. When snug in neutral I can’t turn anything. When I back it off slightly I can freely turn the prop. Shift it into gear and the prop will turn the shaft. When snug I can’t turn anything (easily) I did it with a drill but the gears don’t feel like they’re smooth. I back it off everything feels smooth but the impeller seems to be less effective. Don’t know what to do.

It takes a bit of effort to turn the driveshaft with a new impeller.-----Assemble it.-----If it pumps water then go fishing.
