I've got a bookcase that measures 30" by 80" that holds about 100 VHS tapes. Most of these tapes were recorded by myself (not store bought tapes) of various movies released in the '80's and recorded on my VHS machine from cable or airway source. Yep, real old school stuff.

I haven't watched them in over 20 years yet I'm reluctant to just throw them out. I started to go through them just now to check titles etc but I kept putting them back on the shelf instead of tossing them into them trash can.

Another bookcase has over 300 audio cassette tapes I recorded off air from a local Bluegrass music station. I love bluegrass music. Some of those tapes contain personal messages from the DJ to me or my family dedicating a song.

I made all those recordings long before there was easy access to the Internet to listen or view the same songs/videos.

I'd appreciate any feedback encouraging me to throw this stuff out or saving it for whatever reason.

I actually had a collection as well and decided to transfer them to DVD's (at least the ones I wanted to keep) and threw the rest away. I had a good collection of 8mm tapes too and bought a used 8mm stereo camera off EBay to transfer them to DVD's. Then I resold the camera to somebody else after I finished the transfer. I also have a nice collection of albums from my teen days and have actually bought CD's to replace all those albums. I bought replacements for those albums on Half dot com for near nothing instead of transferring those albums to CD's. A lot cheaper and cleaner sounding too. When I get to cleaning out that section of the house again, those old albums will be gone too. I'll probably donate them to some charitable organization so they can maybe sell them and use the money...

I would toss the VHS and if you remember a movie you liked find it on DVD or Bluray on ebay. For the personal tapes you can transfer them to digital. Make sure you have backups also. CDs and DVDs can not be reliable after so many years.

Yep, I didn't bother to mention the couple of hundred Vinyl 33s and 45s we have. I'm pretty sure we don't have any 78s hanging around! There's just something about listening to vinyl that all the new formats don't capture. I still even have a few 8 tracks around the house!!

I gave up years ago trying to adapt to the newest and latest format. The consumer buys a blue-ray,CD,etc and the next week something new comes out. I don't own an i-pod,i-pad, blue tooth or that little gizmo that plugs into a newer automobile that contains 20,000 songs.

I've got a cell phone that only makes and receives phone calls. It doesn't have video or a camera the phone is only a phone.

I guess the reason I keep all this old stuff is just for sentimental reasons. I'm sure the kids will throw it out once I'm gone.

Vinyl is one thing tape is another. Tape degrades over time even when not used.

I had the same problem.

I took my old cassette tapes of recorded music and put them in my truck. I would listen to them one last time and then leave them in plain view on top of a gas pump when I filled up. I'll never know what happened to them from there.

The VCR tapes I either threw out or watched the movie one last time and then threw them out.

Those things are cool ... I can't believe how interesting they are to listen too.

I actually still have a very good turntable myself that I will sell one day. It is a Pioneer PL510 direct drive manual. It has that strobe so both the 33 and 45 rpms can be set perfectly too. Nice dampened manual arm and great anti-skate adjustments. It was rated one of the top best during its days... Why do I still have it? I seriously don't know! I also have a Heathkit AR1500 stereo receiver AND two Acoustic Research AR3a speakers that I still use presently too... The speakers will probably never leave our house...

:faint2: I though my G/F was the only one like that. we have a shelf full of VHS and NO VHS PLAYER. yet she still will not let me throw out the tapes. I did get all the cassettes out one at a time. LOL

Tyme, I would hold onto those albums. especially if you have any of the more wanted artists.

Not only have I gotten rid of all my VHS and cassette tapes, the CDs are all being sent to Amazon to get $1/each back.

I had a very good turntable too. Goodwill got that one.

Re: I'm a hoarder

A few years back I purchased a Led Zep album in mp3 format. Soon after I realized over the years I had the album as a vinyl LP, an eight track tape, a cassette tape, a CD, and now digital!!! What's next? When I married the eight tracks were discarded. A decade ago my cassettes made it to the dumpster. Still have my vinyl and CDs floating around gathering dust.

I was watching "How is made" the other day. There were making some hi-tech turntables on there. Carbon fiber and all. I have heard the sound on records was better, I dont know about that though. All of our records we had were scratched up.

When I was a kid, I used to sit in the front seat of our Olds Delta 88 diesel, with no seatbelt either. My dad would always have Kenny Rodgers 8-track playing. He had other cassettes but I never remember him playing anything else.

Re: I'm a hoarder

They say that vinyl is better because there are subtle sounds that digital remove, being a cleaner format. But vinyl has its limitations as well being certain frequencies can't be reproduced because of the vinyl groove limitations to eliminate cross talk between the grooves. So either way you go there are differences that some like and others don't. If I only had the money I spend on 8-track tapes in their days... Literally hundreds of 8-tracks, and I don't have but one left now in my house! It will probably see the trash can too!
