That must be why baseball is so big in Japan, and why every year now a few games of either football or baseball is played in different countries. Must also why football (though slightly different) has grown to Canada, and why NFL Europe is growing so much.
Soccer is growing around here like crazy too.Could you see the world cup on tv the last time?
How many soccer moms are there compared to football moms?

I might could get interested in watching soccer if there was more scoring, as some have suggested. I don't like games that can end in a tie. Seems incomplete somehow. Gotta be great exercise though. Good for the youth. Get 'em off the couch and out of the Oreo cookies.

Dave

It's not about how fast anyone can run. There is the equiv of a fast break in soccer, too, it's just that the ball meeds to be in motion first.

Can you imagine baseball without its quasi-offside rule? … what if players were allowed to run the bases before they hit the ball?!?

Agree with the behaviour of players. Don't let me upset you here, as i mean no harm, but we call taking a dive for a penalty "throwing a Hollywood" :D ....I'm serious.....
As for the off-side rule.........well I think it is only American type games that do not have "off-side" rules. Our Rugby Union (Rugger to a certain class of POM), Rugby League, Soccer, Hockey etc all have off-side. Aerial Ping-pong is the exception but that is totally different.
Never been a Soccer fan, but do appreciate the Game. I read: It is the largest sport in the World. This World Cup is the largest sporting event in the World.
Another interesting points about American Sports.......they seem to have "time-out" and a large number of reserves on the bench, and as for bringing on a specalised kicker just to make a kick.........well that is a sign of softness to us. Our kickers have to play the game too.
Then again, different Courses, different Horses.

Cheers
Phillip

Rules Of The Game At one point during a soccer game, the coach said to one of his young players, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?" The little boy nodded in the affirmative. "Do you understand that what matters is how we play together as a team?" The little boy nodded yes. "So," the coach continued, "when offsides is called, or a handball is not called, you don't argue or curse or attack the referee. Do you understand all that?" Again the little boy nodded. "Good," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain it to your mother."

Crusty...TV Ratings!! Are you kidding me? The entire Rest of the world is tuned in to the World Cup. If the people of the countries who played on TV today, had televisions, they were tuned in to watch Their team. FIFA's not worried that a few million people are watching summer re-runs from ABC/NBC/CBS, oh yeah, and the Republican Channel..(FOX)
North American kids want it, their parents want it, but the Networks don't. Its absolutely, the biggest sport in the world. I'll bet that every one of those Fans has never seen Manning choke, for Iniannapolis(sp), in the Playoffs. I'm a Patriots fan, so I love thinking about that. But I digress...The world doesn't care that that North America is not watching the most popular sport. They'de like us to, though.
Most of them are not watching Survivor, Big Brother, or American Idol. Regardless of how poor, or affluent they are, if they have a TV...they're watching the World Cup. Whats funny is, somehow, FIFA rated the USA as rated #5! I'm tellin' ya, they just want you to see what yer missin'

Please remind me Philip, was the Australian national soccer team the one that a few years ago was so rowdy and drunk on a flight and was so wild with the stewardesses that the pilot had to cut the flight short and unload the soccer team before the flight could continue???

I don't watch or play Soccer, but I have to agree with 18rabbit (communist, same thing). Soccer has a higher degree of skill requirement than most major sports. In Basketball, you have height advantage. In Football, you have size advantage. In Baseball you have the advantage of steroid. Soccer is like surfing; you can be any size, shape, height, ball, full set of hair, democrat or republican, but if you ain't got skills, you ain't gonna make it.

It is not as popular here YET because we don't have too many skilled natural born Players. So the commercial aspect isn't there thus limiting its popularity. That will change in the near future as more and more kids are taking up Soccer as a hobby. World here we come.

Re: I'll watch soccer when....

Havn't heard that one Rolmops, not about a soccer team anyway.
There was an instance with a cricket team....think it was an Aussie (State) team, but I also think the cilprits may have included an English International doing an off-season out here....was it Botham.....(probably not)....
then there was the English Band from Manchester....but I understand their behaviour improved when some one explained to them being thrown off at Perth meant they would never make their Melbourne concert 3 days later.
Then there was a Kiwi Rugby Union Team, (the Dunedin Pirates I think) who caused a problem (big) on a flight.
There was another Rugby team, that apparantly when the plane went down the runway, there was a brown-eye in most windows.
Don't your sportsmen do something similar? :D
Cheers
Phillip

Kiwi Phil
Not that it's hard! But your confusing me here. ;)
Remember what side of the pond I'm comming from and the terms we use.
It sounds like you are refering to soccer and rugby as the same game.

Had a friend who was on a loose netted international team. They played the pro's.
He was a captain in the Army with me in Korea and lived for Rugby!

Rugby IMO is the only true game of football! Hard hitting, no padding, smack the other guy with a head butt that knocks him out, bare bones team fighting.

American Soccer and Football are for the girlie guys that watch Rugby!

IE: I have 5 grand kids that play soccer and the oldest is so excited because they have been picked for a real team this year.

Up until now if one team made 5 points they had to help the other team make points until they were even. Soccer SUCKS! What kind of a sport is that!
Worse than baseball which isnt even a sport at all!

I've been doing google searches while typing this.
Is Soccer a watered down version of Rugby??

Thanks

Link

Europeans call cricket cricket.

Therein endeth the leason :p

Bob

Hellooo??? Link, come back buddy...you're so far out there, farther then Major Tom. This is ground control to Major Tom....for the girlie guys? are you out of your mind? where in the crap that you have to make up for the other team points? and NO, soccer is not a water down version of ruggby, it's totally different game. If you think it girlie, try to go out on a 100 meters long by 50 meters wide and run constantly for 45 minutes half without time out.

I would leave a league that promoted trying to end a game in a tie by making the winning team turn around and score against itself so the less talented or unlucky team doesn't feel badly.

Part of the benefit of sports is to teach kids to learn to lose well and win well. It's called "sportsmanship". Now, if I have a very strong team and am playing a weaker team, I will play my strongest players on defense or sub them out once it is apparent that we are going to win the game. My objective is not to run up the score and make the opposing coach, parents, and players feel badly.

Soccer is a good sport. Some love it. Some would rather watch grass grow.

I, for one, could care less about watching Nascar, pro baseball, pro basketball, horse racing, drag racing, synchronized swimming. Do those sports "suck"? Well, no, but they just don't appeal to me.
