1) they get rid of that stupid "offsides" rule. Some wussie must have come up with that one. "Aw man, you can run faster than me and that isnt fair, I'm telling my mommie"

2) they penalize the players for over acting and falling down when the guy barley touches him. Or at least give out academy awards. :D

Ken

Re: I'll watch soccer when....

Off sides is a good rule, keeps the game on the ball, out from in front of the goal until the ball gets there. If you understand the game dynamics the rule makes sense. In addition, the off sides rule is probably a little more flexible than you may think.

Soccer is more of a contact sport than many people realize. Everyone is hurt unless they aren’t. And when they get to the level of academy award acting, they also get a yellow card. Cards (yellow or red) are not good...not something to collect and trade.

Don’t know if it is true but I heard on the news hear that the World Cup (soccer) is the most popular porting event in the world, more popular than the Olympics.

Re: I'll watch soccer when....

I, for one, really enjoy the sport. I grew up playing the sport and my 3 kids all play as well (I coach them).

It is a great sport for youth for several reasons:
1. It is great exercise (much better than t-ball/baseball).
2. It is relatively inexpensive to play (compaired to U.S. football).
3. The game can be fast-paced and exciting at that early age.
4. You get to learn to act (well, act "hurt" that is - just kidding).

For what the sport lacks in exciting goal-scoring at times (a major complaint by many in the U.S.), it makes up with it in turn-overs. Where you might have only 2 or three turnovers in a game of U.S. football, in soccer, within seconds, a team will be attempting to score on the opponents goal only to find their own goal being shot upon by the opponent.

When you get to the level of World Cup soccer, the skills that they players make look easy are, in fact, extremely difficult. There is great skill involved in the sport, especially considering that the ball must be controlled without the use of hands (other than throw ins).

Honestly, I could see soccer become more exciting to those that don't appreciate the game if they did the following:
- did away with offsides (which would allow for cherry picking and more goals)
- made the goal two foot taller and 6 foot wider (allowing for more goals).

I don’t think just more goals is going to do it. I think the skill level of pro soccer is well beyond the understanding of the NFL and NASCAR crowds. Basically, unless you play the game you can’t get a realistic understanding of the level of skill the world class players have. Watching some of the World Cup plays puts a world of tingle on me to see...just amazing skill and team work.

You're right 18rabbit, the FIFA world cup is not just most popular but also is the most important sporting event for every country in the world except America. The games are being televise to every corner of the world. If they get rid of the offside rule then there would be cherry picking like crazy.

Typical soccer snob remark. I like NFL and NASCAR so I guess I'll never reach the intelligence level of the 6-30 year olds running around kicking a ball at soccer camp.
Is that an example of the level I need to reach to understand pro soccer?

Re: I'll watch soccer when....

Americans like football and racing because we can fantasize being in it. We can drive a car, some of us have raced on a track, so we can imagine driving a Nextel Cup car. We played sandlot or high school football so we can fantasize being out there with a frail old 165lb body, taking on a 350lb lineman.

Soccer (football everywhere in the world but here) at World Cup level is as far from sandlot soccer as F1 is from the bumper cars at the fair. The skills required are beyond my ability to imagine myself doing them. Nevertheless, I have watched enough to appreciate what is happening.

Like Hockey, you gotta watch it for a while before anything makes sense. The offsides rule is good for the same reasons that it is good in hockey.

JB, I hate the offsides rule in hockey too.

Can you imagine the sport of basketball with an offsides rule. It would eliminate the fast break.

Why should you penalize someone for running the field faster than the competition.

Sure some teams would camp out people near the goal, but that would hurt them on defence.

And heaven forbid if we get a high scoring soccer or hockey game.

And really the overacting is the killer. James, do they really teach that to the kids at a young age? That isnt something I feel comfortable teaching my kids.

Ken

If only the US appreciated soccer more... then we would be as enlightened as the rest of the world. Look how good they're all doing.

Soccer is boring. Sure, they have some great talent. So do chess players. Do I have to watch chess now to be smart enough for the elite?

I suspect that soccer is as boring to Americans as baseball and football is to the rest of the world. It all depends on what you grow up with.

That must be why baseball is so big in Japan, and why every year now a few games of either football or baseball is played in different countries. Must also why football (though slightly different) has grown to Canada, and why NFL Europe is growing so much.

I can watch soccer somewhat..........I prefer the indoor type, especially since the local team is probably one of the best in the country (Milwaukee Wave). I played soccer growing up for 7 years, also played football. Soccer is a finese sport, football is all about brute strength. To say football isnt a "smart mans game" is just plain stupid. If you say that, than clearly YOU have never played it. You have to be in the right place all the time......the one time you arent, you get burned. And if you think a 6th grader can read a nickel defense than you are a moron. It takes smarts, and if you dont have much of that you have to have a hell of a lot of natrual ability.

Re: I'll watch soccer when....

I hear ya Kiz.....................I really thought I had finally got to grips with the offside rule and then they went and changed it

The acting I'm with you 110% on! The referees are supposed to clamping down hard on this but I'm not seeing a whole lot of evidence on it again this time around. Like has been said: football (soccer) is a contact sport and people do get badly hurt in it, sometimes with career-ending injuries. Problem is that the wussies that play the sport don't realise that is why they get paid mega-bucks over here to play (or not half the time!).

It's been hilarious watching the news coverage on one of the England players and his injury (a fractured metatarsal). World events have often taken second-billing to this bloke and his broken toe
Seems a heck of a lot of people forget that there are ten other people on the team...................unless their all too scared to get hurt too? :D

I was just teasing about the acting (hurt). I've never taught it, nor have I seen players taking a dive to draw a penalty. Soccer is a contact sport and when you get two players running full speed at one another with nothing more than shin guards, the collision is going to hurt. Just getting tripped or getting your lets tangled can be a simple fall or actually painful. There is definitely some acting/exagurating going on in World Cup Soccer.
